This Week In Army Athletics
October 28, 2013 | General
Oct. 23, 2013
Dear Friends,
It was a week full of streaks. The men's soccer, sprint football and volleyball teams added wins to their victory runs, while the men's cross country team snapped an important streak, defeating Navy for the first time since 2008.
Firstie Ricardo Galindo led Army to a 26-29 win against the Mids at the West Point Golf Course last Friday. It was the second straight year Ricardo won the individual race, becoming our first multiple winner since 2005. For his efforts, he was named the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week.
Following the cross country events, we are 3-1 this fall versus Navy and 5-1 overall against our service academy rivals. The next chance to add to our winning ways comes this Saturday when the sprint football team hosts the Mids at Shea Stadium. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Not only is the gold star on the line, but after the team's 57-0 win over Princeton on Saturday, the College Sprint Football League championship is up for grabs. Mark West's squad is 6-0 this season and has won 13 straight games dating back to last season.
The volleyball team is also on a roll, extending its winning streak to six matches after a 3-0 win at Holy Cross on Saturday. Olivia Fairfield earned her third straight Patriot League Rookie of the Week award for her performances in two wins against the Crusaders. Olivia had a season-best five service aces and seven kills in Tuesday's win. She followed that with a six-kill, two-block effort on Saturday. The team is now 8-1 in league play and is tied for first with American, one-half game ahead of Colgate.
The men's soccer team was 2-0 this past week and has now won six straight matches. The team's 11-1-1 start is the best in program history, and its 5-0 Patriot League record is just win one shy of matching the program record for conference victories. Plebe Alex Jaroscak scored the game-winner in last Saturday's 2-1 overtime victory over American, while plebes Ethan Spivack and Nick Williams both scored in Tuesday's 2-0 win at Central Connecticut. Goalkeeper Winston Boldt registered his 10th shutout of the season, breaking the Academy single-season standard. Plebe Tanner Vosvick was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Week after recording a penalty-kick goal and assisting on the game-winning tally versus the Eagles. It was his second straight award and the team's fifth of the season.
On the football front, we found out that the kickoff time for the game at Air Force on Nov. 2 is noon ET, which is 10 a.m. in Colorado. The game will be televised live by ESPNU.
