Oct. 16, 2013
Dear Friends,
What a week to be an Army fan! Our teams continued to stack victories, including a fourth straight win against our service-academy rivals. We were also witness to some great individual performances, including a record-breaking effort at Michie Stadium.
The volleyball team reeled off its 12th straight Star Match win versus Navy Saturday night at Gillis Field House. The victory improved our record against Navy to 2-0 so far this season (golf) and marked the team’s sixth win in seven Patriot League matches. Plebe Olivia Fairfield was named the conference rookie of the week. Her highlight performance came against the Mids with 17 kills and a .708 hitting percentage. Including the win over Lafayette, Olivia averaged 3.33 kills and 1.00 blocks per set. The team improved to 7-1 in league play and remained tied for first in the conference with a 3-0 win over Holy Cross on Tuesday night.
More than 36,000 fans watched the football team score a 50-25 win over Eastern Michigan at Michie Stadium. Cow Terry Baggett ran for an Army-record 304 yards and four touchdowns on just 18 carries. His final touchdown was a 96-yard run, the second-longest in Academy history. Terry earned a number of accolades for his performance, including becoming the first Army player to win the Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week. He was also named the College Football Performance Awards National Running Back of the Week, the FBS Independent Offensive Player of the Week and the Army Athletic Association of the Week.
The men’s soccer team added two more shutout victories to its total, defeating both Colgate and Loyola by scores of 1-0. The team is 9-1-1 overall and 4-0 in the Patriot League. It’s the program’s best overall start since 1975 and the best Patriot League start since 1996. Goalkeeper Winston Boldt has already tied the program record for single-season shutouts (9). This week, Tanner Vosvick became the fourth Army player to win the Patriot League Rookie of the Week this season. Tanner scored the game-winning goal versus Loyola.
The sprint football team extended its winning streak with a 51-6 win over Mansfield. The team has won 12 straight games dating back to last season. There are two games left on the schedule, both of which are at home. Princeton visits Shea Stadium on Friday and then a showdown with Navy looms on Oct. 26. That game is not only for service academy bragging rights, but as of this week’s standings, will decide the CSFL championship.
It’s the cross country program’s turn to face Navy this week. Both the men’s and women’s team will race the Mids on Friday afternoon at the West Point Golf Course.
