This Week In Army Athletics

Jan. 9, 2013
Dear Friends,
We hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday season and were able to spend some time with friends and family. We are back in full swing here at West Point with the start of classes and the competition schedule gearing back up from the TEE and holiday breaks.
The hockey team continued its strong play in Atlantic Hockey Association play, splitting a series with 19th-ranked Robert Morris. Brian Riley's squad scored its first win over a ranked team since 2009, and now stands in sole possession of second place in the league standings. Goalkeeper Rob Tadazak was this week's Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for his efforts since the break for term-ending exams. In that span, Rob posted back-to-back shutouts, a program first since 2008. The team hopes to carry its momentum into this weekend's series at Air Force.
While we're off to a great league start on the ice, the turn of the calendar to January signals the start of conference play for a lot of our other programs. The women's basketball team completed its non-conference schedule with an 11-4 mark, its best since going 13-3 in 2006-07. The team plays its first Patriot League game on Saturday at home versus Bucknell. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
The men's basketball team's group of seven plebes that are playing at least eight minutes and accounting for more than half the team's scoring, rebounding, assists and steals will get their first taste of conference action at Bucknell on Saturday night. Kyle Wilson, the league's highest-scoring rookie at 12.1 points per game, was the conference rookie of the week for the third time this season. It is the most such citations by an Army player since 2008-09.
The track & field squads are off to good starts with four cadets reaching postseason qualifying marks in the season's first meet. Lisa Junta (3,000 meters), McKenzie Majchrzak (high jump), Nick Snoad (weight throw) and Christopher Smith (500 meters) all qualified for the ECAC/IC4A championship meets. Lisa's time of 9:50.04 was the third-fastest time in Academy history.
We achieved some tremendous success in 2012, and are looking forward to even more triumphs on the fields of friendly strife, in the classroom and in the Corps of Cadets in 2013.
