WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army women’s tennis began its busy week with a 7-0 sweep of Hofstra on Tuesday afternoon at West Point’s Malek Courts. The match against the Pride was the first of four contests over the final five days of the regular season for the Black Knights, and it also marked Army’s final nonconference opponent.
Army (16-6, 2-0 Patriot League) swept the doubles point, which include a clean 8-0 sweep by sophomores Carly Riney and Margaret Iliev at No. 3. The Black Knight duo topped Paige Polizois and Malissa Gilanchi of Hofstra (6-12, 1-3 Colonial) to jump to 11-1 this spring and 13-2 overall.
In singles play, Army switched up its often-used lineup, tagging Riney and junior co-captain Larraine Saavedra for their first singles contests since March 3. Riney defeated Gilanchi, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 3 to improve to 7-3 on the year, while Saavedra cruised by Bianca Derrick, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4, bumping her season mark to 11-5.
Freshman Maya Parker also had a notable win for the Black Knights, defeating Brooke Sailer, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5. Parker improved to 6-0 in dual matches during her first season at West Point.
The win over the Pride stretched Army’s all-time series lead to 23-0 against its regional foe. Hofstra is one of just four opponents the Black Knights have faced at least 10 times and never lost to.
Following Tuesday’s final nonconference tune up, Army will host Patriot League foes Lafayette (Friday, 3:30 p.m.), Holy Cross (Friday, 7 p.m.) and Bucknell (Saturday, 2 p.m.) to conclude the regular season.
