Women's Tennis Opens Conference Play with Sweep of Colgate

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army women’s tennis captured its 50th consecutive Patriot League regular-season match on Saturday in its conference opener against Colgate on Saturday morning. The Black Knights swept the Raiders 7-0 on their home courts at Lichtenberg Tennis Center to improve to 13-6 on the season.
The Black Knights jumped ahead 1-0 after sweeping the doubles matches from the Raiders (3-11, 0-2 PL). Teaming for the first time since March 3, sophomores Margaret Iliev and Carly Riney improved to 9-1 this spring with an 8-3 defeat of Merideth Rock and Jackie Finn at No. 3. Sisters Della Taylor and Elle Taylor improved their team-best win total to 19 with an 8-4 win over Alex Petrini and Stephanie Brown. Junior co-captain Erin Colton and sophomore Jamila Paul rounded out Army’s doubles winners with an 8-2 victory at No. 2 over Kelsey Shea and Kelsey Wanhainen.
Colton snapped her eight-match singles losing streak with a 6-2, 6-7, 10-2 victory over Petrini at No. 1, while freshman Natalie Allen improved to 21-7 on the year by cruising to a 6-0, 6-0 win opposite Rock at No. 4. Allen is two wins shy of cracking Army’s all-time top-15 list for single-season victories. Paul also highlighted the singles matches by capturing her eighth consecutive win by knocking off Shea 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2.
Army will remain on its home courts for its next match when the Black Knights host Long Island on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
