MANASQUAN, N.J. – Army women’s tennis’ winning streak came to a halt on Friday afternoon when regional foe Rutgers scored a 5-2 victory over the Black Knights. Playing at the Atlantic Club in Manasquan, N.J., Army dropped to 6-2 on the season while RU improved to 4-1.
Rutgers narrowly captured the doubles point by prevailing in the decisive No. 3 match. After Nos. 1 and 2 were decided by 8-4 scores with the Scarlet Knights winning at No. 1 and Army’s Erin Colton and Jamila Paul at No. 2, the third match went into a tiebreaker with RU coming away with the point. Army freshman Natalie Allen and sophomore Margaret Iliev fell 9-8 (7-1) to Morgan Ivey and Lindsay Balsamo.
Allen and Iliev dropped to 0-2 on the season while Colton and Paul improved to an Army-best 5-1 as a doubles team this season.
Allen continued to be a bright spot in the Army singles lineup, winning her 15th match of the season. The Army plebe defeated Noor Judeh, 7-5, 7-6 (0), improving her dual match record to a team-best 7-1.
Classmate Elle Taylor was responsible for Army’s other point on the afternoon, defeating Balsamo 6-2, 1-6 (10-5) for her fifth straight victory of the spring. Taylor bumped her season record to 9-3, tying older sister Della Taylor to rank second on the team in season wins.
