This Week In Army Athletics

Nov. 7, 2012
Dear Friends,
More service academy wins and a postseason-clinching victory highlighted the past week of competition.
The football's team win over Air Force on Saturday clinched a perfect 3-0 fall season against the Falcons. Trent Steelman and the best defensive effort of the season were the highlights of a memorable day at Michie. Trent was honored as the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week for his 102-yard, two-touchdown effort on the ground. He also added 100 passing yards. Geoffery Bacon was the FBS Independent Defensive Player of the Week after racking up 13 tackles and an interception. Nate Combs also had an award-worthy effort with eight tackles, a fumble recovery for a touchdown and an interception. The victory set up a winner-take-all match up with Navy for this year's Commander In Chief's Trophy.
The sprint football team started the weekend off with a victory at Navy on Friday night. The win secured the program's 18th undefeated season since 1957 and this year's Collegiate Sprint Football League championship. It also assured at least an even split of this fall's competitions against the Mids. With only the football game on Dec. 8 remaining, we currently hold a 4-3-1 overall record against Navy and a 3-3-1 mark in Star competitions.
The volleyball team is the next squad with a chance to win a conference championship. The team's win at Bucknell on Saturday guaranteed its spot in the upcoming Patriot League Tournament for the 14th straight season. Army is currently tied for second place headed into the last weekend of the regular season. The squad will make a trip through the Lehigh Valley, taking on Lafayette and Lehigh on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
While the fall sports are wrapping up and heading into the postseason, the winter sports are just starting the thick of their competition schedules. The wrestling team opened its 2012-13 campaign last weekend, and both basketball teams will hit the court this week. The women's squad opens up at Wagner on Friday night, while the men's squad begins its season the next day versus Air Force in the All-Military Classic hosted by The Citadel.
The women make their home debut on Monday versus St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7 p.m., and the men follow on Friday, Nov. 16 at 4 p.m. versus Binghamton. Season and single-game tickets for both teams are on sale.
We also received some great classroom-related news as well. Men's soccer players Mitch Johnson and Winston Boldt were among the 11 Patriot League student-athletes named to the conference's Academic All-League Team. It was Mitch's third straight selection, which accounts for both on-field and academic performance. Players must have a minimum GPA of 3.2 and be a starter or key contributor.
