This Week In Army Athletics

Oct. 31, 2012
Dear Friends,
We hope everyone that had to go through this week's storm stayed safe and continues to be in the best possible circumstances throughout the recovery process.
While the weather caused some issues with this week's schedule, we want to assure everyone that Saturday's football game with Air Force is set to go on as scheduled. West Point is fully operational, and will be ready to host what is set to be an exciting contest. With a packed house expected, we want to stress the importance of arriving early on Saturday in order to make sure that you catch all the action at Michie Stadium.
On the subject of service academy rivals, the golf team had a tremendous showing at the Service Academy Classic last week. Anthony Kim took the individual championship for the second time in his career to lead the team to a first-place tie with Air Force. The two teams shot the same score each round and were named co-champions. It was the program's first team title since 1994.
Anthony was chosen as Co-Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week, along with cross country runner Lisa Junta. Lisa finished third at last weekend's Patriot League Championship, the best finish by an Army runner in the women's race since 1998. She was one of five men's and women's runners who earned All-Patriot League honors. Mary Prakel and Rachel King were second-team all-conference on the women's side, while Ricky Galindo and Kendall Ward earned second-team certificates for the men.
The volleyball team pulled within one win of securing a spot in the Patriot League Tournament with a pair of victories last week. Ariana Mankus was named the Patriot League Player of the Week award after reaching double-digits in kills for the 16th and 17th times. The team is currently in second place, and a win at Colgate or Bucknell this weekend will put the team into the postseason.
We would also like to congratulate hockey head coach Brian Riley on his 100th career victory. The team defeated Holy Cross, 7-2, on Saturday to remain unbeaten in Atlantic Hockey Association play at 2-0-1.
Aside from the football game against Air Force, it is a big week for the service academy rivalries. The sprint football team will travel to Navy on Friday for the CSFL championship game. Both teams are 6-0 heading into this week's showdown. The rifle team will compete against Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard in the annual President's Trophy Match in Colorado Springs. Army has won the last three championships and six of the last seven President's Trophy competitions.

• Tippett's 100-yard effort was a career-high, as were his 20 carries and his long rush of 26 yards. He also scored his first touchdown of the season. Tippett is the fifth Army player to rush for 100 yards this season, the most since the 1999 team also had five players reach the century mark.

• Jarrett Mackey made a career-high 13 tackles to lead the Black Knights.
Golf
• Anthony Kim won the individual championship and Army shared the team title with Air Force at the Service Academy Classic. Men's Swimming & Diving (4-0, 0-0 Patriot League)
• Army downed visiting Connecticut, 167.5-132.5 on Friday evening to remain undefeated.
• Senior Ayman Andrews had a hand in three victories in the pool, and fellow senior Chris Nguyen swept the diving events to pace the Black Knights. Army and UConn split the 16 events with each squad posting eight victories, but the Black Knights' 10 runner-up finishes proved to be the difference in the competitive meet.
• Andrews began the meet by teaming with junior Kenny Yacynych, junior Carter Kelly and senior Dan Foky to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:33.92. Andrews went on to sweep the butterfly events, taking gold in both the 100 fly (46.69) and 200 fly (1:53.30).

Women's Swimming & Diving (3-2, 0-0 Patriot League)
• Army fell to Connecticut, 174-126, on Friday evening.
• Nat Beale had a hand in four victories in the pool, and Molly Mucciarone was a part of three wins to pace the Black Knight women (3-2). Army won seven of the 16 events, but UConn was able to hold off the upstart Black Knights to secure the victory in a hard-fought meet.
• Beale, who continues to impress during her freshman campaign, began the night by teaming with Jess Fabrizio, Mucciarone and Grace Hamilton to take gold in the 200-yard medley relay (1:49.35). Beale then went on to post victories in the 100 back (59.22), 200 back (2:06.01) and 200 IM (2:10.40).

Volleyball (17-7, 8-2 Patriot League)
• Army picked up a pair of wins last week and improved to 17-7 on the season. The Black Knights swept Manhattan in the final regular-season match at Gillis Field House last Wednesday before registering its eighth Patriot League win of the year at Holy Cross on Saturday.
• Sitting in second place in the Patriot League standings with an 8-2 conference record, the Black Knights can clinch a spot in the four-team Patriot League Tournament with a win this weekend. Army visits Colgate and Bucknell on Friday and Saturday, respectively. A bid would be the Black Knights' 14th-straight tournament berth, which extends a conference record.
• With 12 kills in a win over Manhattan on Wednesday, co-captain Ariana Mankus cracked the Patriot League's top 10 for career kills. She averaged 4.00 kills per set over two matches last week en route to her second Molten Patriot League Player of the Week accolades on Monday. Mankus, who entered the league's top 10 for career digs earlier this season, currently sits in seventh place all-time amongst the Patriot League's kill leaders (1,471) and second in Academy history.
• Margaux Jarka reached double-digit kills in both matches last week.

• While Ariana Mankus and D.J. Phee continue to lead the Patriot League in kills and digs, respectively, the team tops the conference in kills, assists, digs and opponent hitting percentage as well. Phee's 5.61 digs per set rank 16th nationally. The Black Knights currently land eighth amongst the top digging teams in the NCAA.
• First serve for the Army at Colgate match is set for Friday, Nov. 2, at 6 p.m. in Hamilton, N.Y. The Black Knights are looking to avenge a 3-0 loss to the Raiders at home earlier this season. Army then visits Bucknell on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 5 p.m.
