Dear Friends,
It was a very busy week here at West Point. In addition to our regular fall sport schedule, the hockey team started their 2012-13 season at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. We get our first look at the squad on its home ice this Friday against Sacred Heart. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m., and the first 1,000 fans through the turnstiles will receive a team photo. After the game, the team will meet the fans and be available for autographs. Click here for ticket information.
The volleyball team continued its march toward the postseason with a pair of victories against Lehigh and Lafayette. The team's 6-1 record has it firmly in second place in the Patriot League standings with a pair of crucial matches coming up this weekend. Navy comes to Gillis Field House on Friday night, while defending league champion American visits on Saturday on Senior Night.
Plebe Zoe Kreitenberg highlighted the volleyball team's two victories and was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week for the first time in her career. She had a career-high six blocks against Lehigh and hit .394 for the weekend.
The sprint football team remained undefeated with a 35-7 win at Penn lat Saturday. The team racked up almost 600 yards of offense, including 414 passing yards from Javier Sustaita and 103 rushing yards and three touchdowns from running back Marquis Morris. Tom Jeffers was named the CSFL Offensive Player of the Week after gaining 204 all-purpose yards on nine catches for 98 yards and a touchdowns and two punt returns for 106 yards.
The women's soccer team cracked the win column in Patriot League play, coming back from a 1-0 deficit to beat Lehigh and keep their postseason hopes alive. Joey Molacek scored the game winner, her team-best seventh goal of the season, in the 77th minute.
The rifle team earned its first victory of the season on Monday with a Great American Rifle Conference victory versus Memphis. Michael Matthews earned medalist honors in both air rifle and smallbore.
Men's cross country runner Ricardo Galindo earned the Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honor after winning the individual title at Navy on Saturday. He was the first Army runner to win the race since 2008.

ARMY ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION PLAY OF THE WEEK
Cross Country
• Army cross country was swept by rival Navy in the annual Star Meets for the second year in a row, as the Midshipmen captured the men's race 20-43, and the women's showdown 20-40 in Annapolis, Md.
• Black Knight cow Ricardo Galindo highlighted the day for Army as Galindo captured the men's individual title by besting a field of 24. Galindo finished Navy's 8K course in 24:38.56, edging out the Midshipmen's John Sweeney by a shade over two seconds.
• Galindo was named AAA Athlete of the Week and Patriot League Runner of the Week, is the first Black Knight to capture first place overall since 2008, when Jon Anderson led the squad to their most recent Star Meet team victory. Galindo's finish also marks the first time since 2007 when the first-place time did not belong to a member of the team which won the meet. He has earned Army's top time in all five races this season.
• On the women's side, injuries wrote the story for the Black Knights as they found themselves without two of their top-three runners of the season in plebe Lindsey Gabow and cow Liz O'Donnell.
• Yearling Lisa Junta continued on a similar successful path, capturing Army's top time for the fifth meet of the year. Junta placed second overall in a field of 21, completing the 6K course in 21:37.90, breaking the course record along with the first-place finisher from Navy.
• The wins for Midshipmen increased their leads in both all-time series. Army falls to 28-46-1 in the men's races, and 10-17 in the women's meets. Navy has won four consecutive men's Star Meets and back-to-back women's races.
• The Army-Navy meet marks the final regular-season competition for the Black Knights. Army will have two weeks to prepare for the Patriot League Championships, which will be hosted by Colgate on Oct. 27.
Football (1-5)
• Army lost to Kent State, 31-17, last Saturday at Michie Stadium. The Black Knights outgained the Golden Flashes, 457-367, but Kent State used big plays, including an 87-yard touchdown run, to score the win.
• Firstie RB Malcolm Brown led the team with 92 yards and his first touchdown of the season on just 11 carries.
• Junior RB Raymond Maples moved into 10th place on Army's career rushing list with 2,025 career yards.
• Freshman QB A.J. Schurr guided the Black Knights on their final two drives, including a 75-yard touchdown march. He threw his first collegiate scoring pass, a six-yard completion to cow WR Patrick Laird. It was Laird's first career touchdown reception.
• Sophomore WR Chevaughn Lawrence caught six passes for 88 yards. It was the most productive day by an Army wide receiver since Alejandro Villanueva caught seven passes for 119 yards versus VMI in 2009.
• Sophomore DT Richard Glover made his first career start and registered a sack for the second straight game.
• Sophomore LB Geoffery Bacon tied his career best with 14 tackles, including a career-high 12 solo stops.
• Army plays its first road game in nearly a month when it travels to Eastern Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 20. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. The game can be viewed live online via ESPN3.
Golf
• Army finished 11 at the 13-team Back of Tennessee Intercollegiate. The 54-hole event was held at the Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tenn.
• Plebe Marcus Plunkett shot his first two career under-par rounds and finished tied for 23rd. Plunkett shot a two-under-70 in the first round and closed with a four-under-par 68.
• Classmate John Lee had two rounds of even-par and tied for 29th.
• Army will compete again Oct. 21-22 at the Service Academy Classic at Trump National in Colts Neck, N.J.
Hockey (0-2-0, 0-0 AHA)
• Army opened the season with a pair of losses at the Ice Breaker Tournament at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo.
• The Black Knights fell to Nebraska-Omaha in the first round and dropped a 4-3 decision to #20 Maine in the consolation game of the traditional season-opening college hockey tournament.
• Mac Lalor, Luke Jenkins, Thane Heller and Josh Richards scored goals for Army over the weekend while Zak Zaremba and Andy Starczewski had a pair of assists. Heller and Jenkins, as well as Joe Kozlak, all picked up their first collegiate points.
• Firstie alternate captain Andy Starczewski played in his 100th career game on Saturday.
• Army will begin conference play with a home-and-home series against Sacred Heart. Friday's home-opener at Tate Rink will feature team photo giveaways and postgame autographs.
Rifle (1-1, 1-1 GARC)
• Cow Michael Matthews earned medalist honors in both events, to include a career-high 592 in air rifle, leading Army to a 4658-4631 victory over GARC (Great America Rifle Conference) rival Memphis Monday afternoon at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
• The win is Army's first of the season as the Black Knights leveled their overall and GARC mark at 1-1 following their 10th straight win over the Tigers.
• Matthews fired a 583 leading an Army sweep of the top three places in smallbore. Joseph Todaro was two points behind with a season-best 581 and Jacob Costa tied his career-high firing a 579.
• Overall, Army claimed six of the top seven spots with Zachary Wells chipping in with a personal best 578, team captain William Mengon posted a 575 and Richard Calvin recorded a 574. Alex Rivera, who finished among the top 10, set a career high 573.
• Matthews' 592 in air rifle eclipsed the 590 mark for the first time in his career as he bested his previous high by three points en route to edging Memphis' Daniel Hermsmeier (590) for medalist honors. Army's next two shooters also set career highs as the Black Knights claimed three of the top five spots with Mengon placing third (589) and Costa finishing fifth (585).
Sprint Football (5-0, 4-0 CSFL)
• Army maintained its perfect record with a 35-7 victory at Penn on Saturday night. Despite tallying a season-low 35 points, the Black Knights amassed nearly 600 yards of offense, as firsties Javier Sustaita and Marquis Morris had a hand in over 500 of those total yards.
• Sustaita passed for a career-high 414 yards, completing 37 of his 54 (69 percent) passes without an interception. The Troy, Texas, native tossed a pair of touchdowns, brining his season total to 19. Sustaita also netted 55 rushing yards.
• Morris, Army's go-to running back this season, had another headlining game, eclipsing the century mark in rushing yards for the second consecutive game. The Decatur, Ala., native gained 103 yards on a career-high 23 attempts to go along with three touchdowns, also a career best.
• Cow Tom Jeffers, named the CSFL Offensive Player of the Week, broke the 200-all-purpose-yard threshold, amassing 106 punt-return yards to go along with nine receptions and 98 yards.
• The Black Knight defense was anchored by senior co-captain Rob Reckner, who totaled a team-best nine tackles. Cow Patrick Franco had another standout night against the opposing quarterback, racking up three sacks to make his total 5.5 sacks over the past two games.
• With two games remaining on the schedule, Army stands atop to the CSFL standings. The groundwork is being laid for yet another CSFL title match against Navy, who also shows an undefeated mark at 4-0 following Friday night's victory over Cornell. The Black Knights will face a winless Princeton team (0-5, 0-4 CSFL) next Saturday, Oct. 20, at West Point's Shea Stadium. Kickoff on Senior Day is set for 1 p.m.
Men's Soccer (3-8-1, 0-3-1 Patriot League)
• Army began the week by posting a 2-1 victory over Adelphi in a non-league match. Plebe forward Jordan Lee scored the game-winning goal as time expired to help the Black Knights snap their seven-game winless streak.
• Firstie midfielder Josh Koeppe opened the scoring versus Adelphi, scoring his team-leading third goal of the season early in the first half.
• Army dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime decision to Colgate in a Patriot League match on Saturday evening.
• Koeppe leads the Black Knights with three goals, two assists and eight points this season.
• The Black Knights return to their conference slate on Saturday, Oct. 20, when they travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to face Bucknell at 7 p.m.
Women's Soccer (6-9, 1-3 Patriot League)
• Army's 2-1 come-from-behind win Patriot League win over Lehigh Sunday kept the Black Knights in contender status for one of four conference tournament berths next month.
• Cow Joey Molacek's team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 77th minute off an assist from classmate Kim An snapped a 1-1 halftime tie and lifted Army to its first league win of the season in its league home debut at Clinton Field.
• Army has a pair of pivotal home matches this weekend taking on Navy (tied for first place in the league) Friday evening in the "Star" match followed by American Sunday afternoon on Senior Day.
Men's Swimming & Diving (2-0, 0-0 Patriot League)
• Army was off this week. The Black Knights return to action on Friday, Oct. 19, when the Black Knights travel to Amherst, Mass., to face Massachusetts. The non-conference dual meet is set to get under way at 5 p.m.
Women's Swimming & Diving (3-0, 0-0 Patriot League)

Men's Tennis
• Army is idle until the ITA Regional Championships. Hosted by Yale, the Regionals are slated for Oct. 18-21.
Women's Tennis
• Army was idle over the weekend and preparing to compete in the ITA Regionals this upcoming weekend here at West Point.
• The tournament, which features the top talent in the region, will take place at the state-of-the-art Litchenberg Tennis Center and begins on Thursday, Oct. 19. The finals will be played on Tuesday, Oct. 23.
• Two Black Knights qualified to partake in the event: Erin Colton and Jamila Paul.
• All matches are free and open to the public.
Volleyball (14-6, 6-1 Patriot League)
• Army's win streak reached three matches with a pair of sweeps last weekend. The Black Knights defeated Lehigh and Lafayette on Friday and Saturday, respectively, to remain firmly in second place in the Patriot League standings.
• The Black Knights have swept their last three opponents and are 9-2 on the season in three-set matches.
• After squeaking out a 26-24 win in the opening set, Army completed the sweep with 25-21 and 25-19 wins in sets two and three, respectively. The Black Knights followed with a dominating performance in the first two sets against Lafayette, winning 25-14 in each. Army went on to secure the sweep with a 25-23 third-set win.
• On the heels of a pair of standout performances during a 2-0 weekend for the Army volleyball team, rookie Zoe Kreitenberg picked up her first career Molten Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor on Monday afternoon. Kreitenberg recorded a career-high six total blocks against Lehigh and hit for a .394 percentage on the weekend.
• Along with Kreitenberg's citation, cow libero D.J. Phee picked up honorable mention accolades. Phee entered the weekend 22nd in the country averaging 5.37 digs per set, and she surpassed that stat by averaging 5.67 per set as Army's defensive anchor in a pair of wins. With Phee's help, the Black Knights held Lehigh to .028 hitting and Lafayette to -.026 in the sweeps.
• Army had a busy weekend, celebrating both Dig Pink and Alumni Weekend. The team dub
• Firstie outside hitter Ariana Mankus and cow outside hitter Margaux Jarka averaged 3.67 and 3.17 kills per set, respectively.
• Army debuted specially designed Dig Pink uniforms by Nike on Friday night. Libero D.J. Phee continued the trend, wearing the pink uniform on Saturday against Lafayette.
• The Black Knights honored a dozen volleyball alumni as a part of Homecoming festivities at West Point over the weekend. The annual Alumni Match took place on Sunday at Gillis Field House.
• Army closes out the home portion of its Patriot League regular-season with a highly anticipated weekend ahead. The Black Knights host rival Navy on Friday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. Less than 24 hours later, Army welcomes defending champion American to Gillis Field House for a 4 p.m. match on Saturday, Oct. 20. The Black Knights beat both teams in the first meeting of 2012 earlier this season. A webcast of both matches next weekend will be available via Knight Vision.
