CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - The Army wrestling team wrapped up competition at the Southern Scuffle on Monday afternoon. The Black Knights finished with 22.5 points to place 17th in the prestigious tournament, which featured several of the nation's top teams.
Penn State successfully defended its title, topping the 23-team field with 191.5 points. Minnesota (177.5 points) placed runner-up, while Missouri (136.0) finished third. Cornell (130.0) and Oregon State (103.0) rounded out the top five.
Senior Jimmy Rafferty and sophomore David White were the only two Army grapplers to see action on the second day of the event, but both Black Knights bowed out of the tournament quickly.
Rafferty dropped a 14-5 major decision to Virginia Tech's Matt Stephens to exit the proceedings in the 157-pound bracket. Rafferty posted a team-best 4-2 record over the course of the weekend after going 4-1 yesterday.
White, meanwhile, was upended by Hofstra's Steve Bonanno (9-4) at 125 pounds. White went 3-2 with a technical fall and a pin at the Southern Scuffle.
Army will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 8, when the Black Knights host EIWA rival Rutgers at Christl Arena. The conference dual match is slated to get under way at 3 p.m.
