Della Taylor Opens Fall Tennis Slate In Convincing Fashion

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Army sophomore Della Taylor began the Black Knights’ fall tennis season in perfect form, going 4-0 in singles and 4-0 in doubles at the Stony Brook Invite over the weekend. Army concluded three days of play at Stony Brook and at the Quinnipiac Invite on Sunday, wrapping up the first weekend of the fall tournament season.
Competing in the B Flight for singles, Taylor opened with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Marist’s Marielle Campbell, followed by a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Stony Brook’s Polina Movchan. Facing Fordham’s Angelika Dabu in the semifinals, Taylor prevailed 7-5, 6-0. The Army sophomore faced Julia Prantl of Fairleigh Dickinson in the finals, earning a 6-4, 6-1 victory to win the flight.
Taylor then teamed with her younger sister, freshman Elle Taylor, in the doubles A Flight. In the opening match, the Taylor sisters defeated the Seawolves’ Katherine Hanson and Salome Mkervalidze, 8-3. Followed with a pair of wins against Marist’s Erin McCarthy and Joana Sun (8-4), and FDU’s Elmine Botes and Irina Dementyeva (8-6), the Black Knight duo advanced to the championship match. Facing Fordham’s Amy Simidian and Sarah Ali, the Army pair prevailed 8-6 to win the bracket.
Sophomore Jamila Paul also took home a title from Stony Brook, winning the One-on-One Doubles A Flight. Paul defeated McCarthy, 6-3, in the quarterfinals, followed by a 6-5(3) victory over Mkervalidze. The Bulverde, Texas native then faced Stefanie Ton of service academy rival Navy in the title match, with the Army cadet-athlete winning, 6-4.
At Quinnipiac the Black Knights took home a pair of consolation bracket titles as junior co-captain Larraine Saavedra won the B Flight singles and classmate Morgen Kiser won the D Flight singles.
Saavredra lost in the first round of the B Flight, 6-3, 6-1, to Connecticut’s Marie Gargiulo, sending her to the consolation bracket. In her first back in the consolation, Saavedra topped Katina Zampas of Hartford, 8-1. The Boca Raton, Fla., native then defeated Kristina Choa of Sacred Heart, 8-5, to win the consolation bracket.
Kiser was knocked out of the main draw with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Maria Rodriguez of Seton Hall in the first round of the D Flight. The Army junior rebounded with three consecutive wins in the consolation bracket, beginning with a 9-8(10) victory over Sarah Griffin of UConn. Following an 8-6 win against Morgan Crystal of Quinnipiac, Kiser won the flight by defeating the Bobcats’ Taylor Massey, 8-0.
Army will return to its home courts Sept. 23-25 when it hosts the Eastern Championships at West Point.
