Army Athletic Association Holds Black Knight Awards
May 16, 2011 | General
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army Athletic Association held the 2011 Black Knight Awards ceremony on Sunday night at Robinson Auditorium. The department's premiere year-end event honored teams and individuals for an outstanding 2010-11 season. Football and Tennis were presented with men's and women's Teams of the Year, respectively. Tennis senior Annie Houghton was named Women's Firstie of the Year, while lacrosse senior Jeremy Boltus garnered the same citation on the men's side.
In its fourth year of existence, the Black Knight Awards honor the best that Army’s 25 athletic teams had to offer in 2010-11 in an award-show format similar to the ESPY Awards. Rich DeMarco, assistant athletic director for marketing, multimedia and broadcasting, emceed the event and guided an audience of more than 400 people through the hour-long affair.
Director of Athletics, Boo Corrigan, opened the night by handing out commemorative athletic director’s coins to a large group of league major award winners, scholar-athletes, academic All-Americans and conference champions. Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Annual Giving Tim Volkmann followed with the presentation of the Army A Club Award, which went to long-time athletics supporter Carl Goldstein.
A trio of seniors were then honored for their work both in and out of the realm of athletics, beginning with baseball's Joey Henshaw taking home the Community Service Award. Henshaw has volutneered his time over the last two years engineering service trips to Nicaragua where he helps to rebuild poverty-stricken communities. Next on the docket was the Maggie Dixon Inspiration Award, which was given in member of the late Army women’s basketball coach. Women's soccer goalie Alex Lostetter was named the winner and lauded for "completely changing the culture of Army women's soccer." Finally, the Army Athletic Association paid tribute to one of its own in the Gene Uchacz Memorial Award. The first award was given in 2010 to honor Uchacz's memory after the long-time associate athletic director lost a courageous 10-month battle with cancer. Hockey's Chris Spracklen took home the 2011 hardware and deservedly so after not playing his senior season due to a back injury, but still finding countless ways to impact his teammates.
The remainder of the awards were distrubuted on athletic performance alone during the 2010-11 season. Each nominee was highlighted through a video presentation leading into each award and each performance award included a men’s and women’s category. The evening followed with awards for Rookie of the Year, Yearling of the Year, Cow of the Year, Firstie of the Year, Performance of the Year and Play of the Year. All of the winners were presented with a glass Black Knight Award for their accomplishments.
As the West Point community prepares for graduation exercises on Saturday, May 21, the Army athletics season continues. While men's and women's tennis wrapped up the 2011 campaign in the NCAA Tournament this weekend, the Army golf team remains the only team still competing. The Black Knights travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the NCAA Regionals, May 19-21.
