Marist Defeats Army, 15-7

FISHKILL, N.Y. - Nick McQuail was 2-for-4 with five RBI and Eric Helmrich went 1-for-3 with three RBI as Marist defeated Army, 15-7, in the sixth annual Hudson Valley Baseball Classic Wednesday evening in front of 2,422 spectators at Dutchess Stadium.
Marist (26-13) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the Red Foxes sent nine men to the plate and pushed across five runs with the aid of just one hit. Three walks, one hit batsman and two Army errors helped contribute to Marist's big inning.
John Schwind walked to lead off the game and he moved to second base when Mike Orefice drew a walk. After Ricky Pacione flew out to center field, Schwind scored the first run of the frame as Michael Gallic reached on an error by Army third baseman Brent Peterson. Bryce Nugent then singled to center field to drive home Orefice with the second run of the frame. Back-to-back walks to Zach Shank and Helmrich forced home another run and chased Army starter Thomas Casey (0-4) from the contest. Nugent and Shank then scored on a throwing error by Army shortstop Clint Moore.
Marist pushed two more runs across in the top of the third to extend its lead to 7-0. Nugent was hit by a pitch to start the frame, and he moved all the way to third base when Shank laid down a sacrifice bunt and took second on a throwing error by Army reliever John Buckley. After Helmrich struck out, McQuail hit a two-run single through the left side of the infield to plate Nugent and Shank.
Army (18-21) got three runs back in the bottom of the fifth to trim Marist's lead to 7-3. Peterson began the uprising as he singled through the left side of the infield. Shaun Wixted then reached on an error by the Marist shortstop and David Darnell singled to load the bases. After Zach Price struck out, Ben Koenigsfeld hit a two-run single that bounced over the head of the Marist third baseman to score Peterson and Wixted. Moore followed with an RBI groundout to shortstop to score Darnell from third base.
Marist blew the game open in the top of the sixth inning as the Red Foxes scored six runs on three hits to extend their lead to 13-3. Schwind was hit by a pitch leading off the frame and he moved to second base when Orefice walked. The Red Foxes then loaded the bases on Pacione's bunt single. Consecutive bases loaded walks to Gallic and Nugent forced in a pair of runs and Helmrich drove in two more with a double down the left field line. McQuail then delivered a two-run single to center field to cap the inning.
The Red Foxes tacked on one run in the top of the seventh inning as Schwind doubled and scored on Gallic's fielder's choice groundout.
Army sent nine men to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and scored four runs to pull to within 14-7. Darnell was hit by a pitch leading off the inning and he advanced to second when Price walked. Koenigsfeld was then hit by a pitch to load the bases for Moore, who hit an RBI single to right field. After Henshaw struck out, Steve May stroked an RBI single to score Price from third base. With the bases still loaded, Andrew Johnson smacked a two-run single through the left side of the infield to plate Koenigsfeld and Moore.
Marist added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning as the Red Foxes loaded the bases with three straight two-out walks and scored on a wild pitch.
Marist starting pitcher Brett Houseal (3-3) picked up the win after allowing three runs (one earned) on five hits in five innings of work. He walked two and struck out five during his outing.
Moore went 2-for-5 with two RBI and one run scored to pace the Army offense. Darnell collected two hits for the Black Knights, who outhit Marist 10-8 in the contest. Koenigsfeld and Johnson each recorded two RBI.
Nugent was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored for Marist.
Army returns to action this weekend (April 30-May 1) when the Black Knights travel to Lewisburg, Pa., to face Bucknell in a four-game Patriot League series.
