DAVIDSON, N.C. - Clint Moore went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and two RBI, but it was not enough as the Army baseball team suffered a 7-4 setback to Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at Wilson Field on the campus of Davidson College.
Army (1-3) took a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning as the Black Knights pushed across a pair of runs. Zach Price led off the game by reaching on an error and he advanced to second on Steve May's groundout. Moore followed with his first double of the day, driving the ball into the gap in right center to score Price from second base. McKague then singled to right field to deliver Moore to the plate with the game's second run.
The Black Knights' two-run lead stood up until the fourth inning when Georgetown scored a pair of runs to knot the score at 2-2. The Hoyas moved in front for the first time in the contest in the sixth inning when they scored an unearned run.
Army moved back in front in the top of the seventh inning as the Black Knights strung together a two-out rally and scored twice to assume a 4-3 edge. Shaun Wixted led off the frame by singling through the right side of the infield. He advanced to second base on Price's sacrifice bunt, and moved to third on May's groundout. Moore came up with two outs and the tying run 90 feet away, and he blasted a ground-rule double to center field to drive in Wixted and tie the score at 3-3. After McKague was intentionally walked, freshman Brent Peterson smacked an RBI single to right field to send McKague to the plate and give Army the lead.
Georgetown (2-1) reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, scoring four times in the frame. Corbin Blakely provided the big blow, hitting a two-run single to break a 4-4 deadlock and put the Hoyas in front for good.
Freshman Thomas Casey took the ball and made his first career start for Army, allowing two runs on five hits over four innings of work. Moore (0-1) picked up the loss as he yielded five runs (three earned) on four hits in two innings. Andy Seaman and McKague each tossed a scoreless inning of relief in the contest.
McKague collected two hits and one RBI for the Black Knights in the loss.
"We have a long ways to go," said Army head coach Joe Sottolano. "We have a lot of talent on our roster and we saw some signs of promise this weekend, but we need to get better in all three facets of the game. Everyone, from the top down, needs to get better, and that includes me. We have a talented team, but we won't reach our full potential until we come together and play within the right rhythm.
"We came into the weekend with a lot of questions, and we were able to find some answers after these four games," added Sottolano. "There are still more questions to be answered, but we certainly know more about our team now than we did before the weekend. I thought Chris Rowley pitched well for us, and several freshmen stepped up on the mound as well. Clint (Moore) swung the bat well this weekend, and freshmen Brent Peterson and Jonathan Crucitti both played well."
Army returns to action next weekend (Feb. 25-27) when the Black Knights travel to College Park, Md., for a three-game series versus the University of Maryland.
Game Notes: Army's all-time record versus Georgetown falls to 16-4 ... Clint Moore was the only Army player to hit safely in all four games this weekend ... Moore's 43 career doubles are the third most in Academy history ... he needs just five more to become Army's all-time leader.
