January 15, 2011 | Wrestling
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Army wrestling team concluded a busy day of dual matches by dropping a 35-6 decision to EIWA rival Rutgers on Saturday evening at College Avenue Gym.
Rutgers, who entered the weekend ranked No. 13 in the latest InterMat national poll, won eight of the 10 bouts en route to the victory.
Army sophomore Jordan Thome capped a perfect day by taking a 3-0 decision from Michael DeMarco in the 133-pound bout. That verdict knotted the match at 3-3, but Rutgers reeled off six straight wins to seize control of the contest.
Junior Orion Ross collected Army's second victory of the match as the third-year performer defeated Michael Wagner, 7-3, at 197 pounds.
Army returns to action next weekend (Jan. 22-23) when the Black Knights travel to Binghamton, N.Y., to compete in the New York State Championships. Army placed runner-up at the prestigious event last season.
Notes: Army falls to 29-11-1 all-time versus Rutgers ... Jordan Thome, who went 3-0 on the day, owns a team-high 19 wins this season ... Orion Ross, who had not won a dual match all season before today, won a pair of matches on Saturday.
