Black Knight Blog - Wednesday, Sept. 1
September 02, 2010 | General
Guess who missed her blog today (Mady Salvani), but I decided to put it up late and hope I can make today's deadline but I am running out of time. I am still in the office trying to get ready for the women's soccer home debut Friday evening along with working with Bob Beretta in getting out the press credentials for the home opener against Hawai'I on Sept. 11. The first game always takes the longest.
Today I helped Tracy Nelson take the women's tennis team shot at Trophy Point in the afternoon then shortly after went to Michie Stadium for the Community autograph and photo session with members of the football team prior to Movie Night. There was a bouncing house for the little kids with the older ones playing football or just having a good time running around.
Once the players showed up, the kids lined up with their friends and family to have the Cadets autograph a poster or two that were available for the public or asking them to sign a shirt, hat or football. The best part is watching the little kids, who are very shy, asking the players for an autograph. Though the players are young themselves, they were attentive to the kids, joking and giving them hi-fives , helping them relax and at the same time feel important. Coach Ellerson was also available and doing his share of talking to folks along with signing a football or two.
After the autograph session, the parents and kids settled down for "Shrek Forever After". I didn't stay around because I am not into little kids movies as I like mature films like "Mary Poppins, "Sound of Music" and "Chit-Chitty Bang Bang."
Last year the movie shown on the video screen at Michie was "Remember the Titans." That is up there with "Field of Dreams", "Hoosiers", "Rudy." and the "Rookie" as part of my dream collection of films. If I could figure out how to record those shows when they are on TV, I would have that collection but it is another area of technology that I struggle with.
I don't get to the movies often but I could watch re-runs of each of those films every night - it doesn't take much to entertain me but I like them because they epitomize to me what Sports are about. It is just good clean entertainment that you could watch with someone from the age of three to 103.
A few times when I am with my friends and they ask what movie I would want to rent, I f mention the above list but they don't understand. Some like love scenes, others action, comedy or scary films which make me afraid to get into my car and turn it on.
One night years ago when I arrived home after sitting through a blood and guts movie, I just wanted to get into the house and lock the doors. But when I hit the steps I didn't hear my sheltie Bogie (short for Beauregard Rutherford Thatcher) bark. Instead I saw what I thought was a shadow of a person over six foot looking out my front window.
I stood frozen, then heard Bogie bark. That's when I realized it was my golden retriever Teddy (short for Theodore Paddington Bear) standing with his feet on the windowsill. Bogie (a rescue dog) was afraid of people, and if someone was in the house, he never would have barked. Once I yelled at Teddy to get down, the shadow disappeared in my window. .
Don't forget this weekend to follow football action, women's soccer, men's soccer, volleyball along with men's and women's cross country. Fall competition is in full swing and you can follow it all on the Army website - www.goArmysports.com.
