Black Knight Blog - Wednesday, Sept. 15

Happy Wednesday out there in cyberspace! As one of my favorite bands would say, "we're halfway there," which usually means to the weekend, but for those of us at Army, that means halfway to the North Texas game! Tracy Nelson at the keyboard today and a little crippled at. I had an unfortunate accident while cooking dinner earlier this week, sliced my finger and had to have three stitches. You would think I lost my whole finger based on the size of the bandage on my hand right now! Stupidity at its best on my part ... should make typing volleyball stats all weekend a real treat!
When looking ahead at the upcoming weekend, I can't help but think about the business that will ensue. There are about a million moving parts going all over the place to make sure sports are covered and events go off without a hitch. It's Hall of Fame weekend here at West Point, so folks over in the "A" Club and external side of the house are busy with last-minute prep for Friday night's plaque unveiling and black tie dinner. It's always a wonderful event and kudos to those involved in pulling it off. Also, congratulations to our very own LTC Mike McElrath for his induction as a part of the Class of 2010! Mike graduated from West Point in 1993 and has since returned to serve as an associate AD for operations over the past year-plus. He's also currently serving as the interim sprint football coach, so is no doubt staying very busy. I actually just got done previewing the video for Friday night's induction, and I loved every second of watching Mike get after it on the football field in the early 90s. Wonder if he could suit up on Saturday for North Texas ... hmmmm.
Of course, football will be looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking 31-28 loss to visiting Hawai'i last Saturday as the Black Knights host North Texas on Saturday at noon. Click here to find out all about what's happening on Black Knights Alley and here to read the Gun Boat's notes for this week. Click here to get your tickets today, and don't forget, you can now print them at home, which is a great new convenience in my opinion.
Football withstanding, it's going to be one of the busiest weekends of the fall for me as I mentioned my volleyball stat typing earlier. Head coach Alma Kovaci and the Black Knights are set to host the third annual West Point Challenge on Friday and Sunday. NOTE - All matches will be played in Christl Arena, the everyday home for the Army men's and women's basketball teams. It's always kind of odd to be gearing up for volleyball in Christl rather than hoops, but I must say, if I'm going to score 10 matches over two days, I would rather have it be in Christl where it's a bit more comfortable.
Air Force, Hofstra, Buffalo and Bryant make their way to West Point for this weekend's tournament. All of the teams will be treated to the Army-North Texas football game on Saturday, see all that West Point has to offer, before returning to the court on Sunday. All matches are free, so if you're in the area, stop on by!
That's about all I have for now. Until next time, GO ARMY! BEAT EVERYONE!
