Friday, April 9 - Apologies And A Busy Weekend
April 09, 2010 | General
I begin with an apology. For some reason, I neglected to put my deadline for my last blog entry in my calendar. Predictably, I missed my day and of course, paid the fine.
New month, new days of daily blogging and new schedule into Outlook so we should be all set.
Ryan Yanoshak joining you this morning with boxing, hockey, baseball, softball, lacrosse, golf, track and field and tennis on the mind.
We begin with boxing. West Point is hosting the boxing national championships at Ike Hall right next door. Since the Brigade Boxing Open wasn't televised on ESPN this year, I didn't get a chance to see our boxing team but they are the two-time defending national champions and hosting the event for the first time. The quarterfinals were yesterday with the semifinals slated for today and the finals on Saturday. Admission is free today with tickets for the finals just $10 if purchased in advance. You can click here for more information.
I am guessing right about now hockey head coach Brian Riley and forward Owen Meyer are gathering at Ford Field for a meeting. A day after Wisconsin beat RIT, 8-1 and Boston College handled Miami, 7-1, the hockey focus shifts to skills. Riley is helping coach the East team - which includes Meyer - in tonight's Frozen Four Skills Challenge. Meyer is the fourth Army player selected to participate in the event, quite the accomplishment since only six skaters are chosen for each team.
Riley and Merrimack coach Mark Dennehy will determine who participates in what events. The competitions will include puck control relay, fastest skater, hardest shot, rapid fire shooting, accuracy shooting and penalty shot. Last year, Zach McKelvie won the fastest skater competition.
Turning to sports that are actually in season, the baseball team travels to Navy and the softball team hosts Lehigh this weekend. Both are big series' and game previews will be posted on the site later today. Don't forget that Sunday's first baseball game from Annapolis, Md., will be on CBS College Sports Network at noon.
Mark your calendary now for the 5th Annual Hudson Valley Baseball Classic. A matchup of the only two Division I teams in the Hudson Valley, both of who won their conferences last year,a free children's clinic, free admission, postgame fireworks and much much more are all of tap. Details here.
The lacrosse team travels to Lewisburg, Pa., for a Patriot League matchup with Bucknell while the track and field teams are hosting Navy, Saturday at Shea Stadium. The golf team is also heading to Pennsylvania, to participate in the Lafayette Spring Invitational and the tennis teams have their usual busy weekend slates.
That's it for me. Have a great weekend.
Go Army!
