Army West Point Athletics

Monday, April 12 - Heading For Home
April 12, 2010 | General
But before we do, there are still plenty of things happening on the Army sports scene and we are coming off a very eventful weekend. Bob Beretta with you this Monday afternoon, following a weekend that saw Army teams post a 5-2 record against Navy. The Black Knights' baseball team led the way, winning its seventh consecutive series "star" and seventh consecutive series against the Mids down in Annapolis.
Army has dominated the baseball series between the arch rivals of late, with head coach Joe Sottolano's club winning 13 of the teams' last 15 meetings and 24 of 29 since 2004. What made this weekend's baseball results even more impressive is the fact that the Black Knights remain saddled by injury troubles and did not throw last year's Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, Ben Koenigsfeld, in the series due to some health issues.
Not to be outdone, the men's tennis team posted its first win over Navy in four years and the men's outdoor track team registered its fourth "star" victory in five years against the Mids with a dual-meet win at West Point. There were also dramatic victories for both the lacrosse team against Bucknell and softball squad against longtime nemesis Lehigh, so it was a pretty enjoyable weekend for Army fans across the board.
This week promises more of the same with exciting home contests planned for the baseball, softball and men's tennis teams, as well as West Point serving as host for the NCAA Gymnastics Championships. The lacrosse squad will take its turn against Navy this weekend, battling the Mids on Saturday at M&T Bank Stadium as part of the Smart Link Day of Rivals, sponsored by Inside Lacrosse Magazine. The game will be televised live by ESPNU.
And of course, Army fans should be marking their calendars for Wednesday night when the winner of the Sullivan Award is announced at the New York Athletic Club. Black Knight junior shortstop Clint Moore is one of six finalists for the honor and will attend the awards banquet on Wednesday in New York. What a tremendous honor to even be considered for the award, which is presented annually to the nation's top amateur athlete. Army has featured two previous Sullivan Award winners - Felix "Doc" Blanchard in 1945 and Young Arnold Tucker in 1946. We'll provide full coverage from the New York Athletic Club on Wednesday so be sure to stay abreast with the latest developments by checking in at www.goARMYsports.com regularly.
In addition to all the events listed above, an important announcement regarding the football program could be coming later in the week, so there's much reason to stay engaged even though summer soon approaches.
The 2009-10 academic year may be slipping away fast, but there's plenty of things for Army fans to get excited about as we round third and head for home.
Until next time, be well and GO ARMY!!!
