Why did you decide to come to West Point? What were some of the deciding factors? Who or what influenced your decision?
I was also recruited to shoot on the Rifle Team, which was my main reason for even looking into the Academy. The coach of the Rifle team and I made contact and I decided to visit. On my visit I was treated with respect and dignity and all my questions were answered by Majors in the Army.
I was not happy with the institution I was at and I needed more challenges and a place where I was known by my name, which is why I decided to come to West Point.
What does it mean to you to be able to compete at West Point?
It means everything. To be able to shoot on the Rifle team has been the best experience I have had here yet. We compete against the best in the nation and are challenged in all of our matches.
What is the best thing about being an athlete at West Point?
The best thing is being part of a team that supports you in every aspect of your life. Whether you're having trouble in academics, physical development or personal situations, there are a group of people who are willing to help. Also, having a team that wants to compete and win as much as me, that's an amazing feat and the Rifle team here at West Point is that team.
What is the most difficult thing?
The hardest aspect is the balance between being a corps squad player and trying to be a part of the company you're in. The entire afternoon and evening are spent working on Rifle skills and the weekends are full of competitions. It takes a lot of effort to show that team the dedication that needs to be present to perform well and also the people in your company that you want to be a part of their lives too.
What is your fondest memory at West Point?
-In sports?
When we traveled to the NCAA tournament last year, it was the best experience that I have had in shooting. We overcame a lot of obstacles that should have put a team at a disadvantage, yet we succeeded in overcoming those problems and showed the nation that we were a top team.
-Outside of sports?
My fondest memory was the summer after Plebe year. Going to Airborne school was amazing and challenged my fears as well as proving to myself that I would fit in with the Army outside of West Point. Heading to Buckner and meeting more of my classmates all while being challenged physically and militarily was more than I could ever have expected.
What adjustments have you had to make since arriving here?
-Socially
Socially I haven't had to make too many adjustments. I still enjoy meeting new people and there are plenty of characters here to get to know. I hang out with friends and we are much more creative with figuring out activities to entertain us than I ever was before. On the other hand, my confidence in speaking with superiors has increased since I have been here and I feel comfortable in all my endeavors, no matter who it is with.
-Athletically
I have been able to practice every day, which is the best thing that could have happened. I was in a club team at the University of Michigan where we practiced once a week. Having the ability to practice five days a week has increased my skills and my ability level with my sport. Outside the team I have also been able to work out and be challenged in classes to increase my athleticism. I work out at least four days a week and I am in the best shape I have ever been.
-Academically
I actually do my homework here, which was my first adjustment. I take a variety of classes which I never did when I was at college and I am able to understand a broader concept range. I use resources much more efficiently here as well. I am comfortable asking any of my professors for help and know that they are willing to take as much time as I need in order to get me to understand the concepts.
What do you enjoy doing during your "down time"?
In my down time I love to listen to music, watch movies, hang out with friends, read books, and dance! I also like calling everyone back at home and keep them updated on my life as well as being updated with what's happening with my family.
What is your major and what is the most interesting thing you've learned here?
I am a Sociology major here at the Academy. The most interesting thing I've learned is that everyone has a different background and a different way of interacting with their environment, and if we listen to what others have to say and their ideas, our minds can be opened to any idea.
Which branch are you planning on entering following graduation?
I hope to branch Medical Service when I graduate.
What is the best thing about being a cadet at West Point?
The fact that I always have people around who have the same interests as I do and want to get to know one another. There is a camaraderie here between classmates that you can't find anywhere else.
