Friday, Feb. 26 - Snow, Snow, Snow & Cancellations
February 26, 2010 | General
Mady Salvani reporting to you on a wintery Feb. 26, 2010 ... West Point called Code Red which means you don't go to work, but our office has to take care of our sports, plus all the postponements and cancellations kept us busy today so we either have to work from home or trudge into the office so we can take care of things.
We have had a few changes for home events with women's tennis being moved to Saturday while softball's trip to Fairfax, Va., for the George Mason Tournament was called because of weather. This is the second time that softball lost out on a tournament because of snow but of all places in the south - you expect that in New York.
The men's basketball game vs. Bucknell on Saturday (Feb. 27) was changed from 4 to 7 p.m., while women's basketball game at Bucknell was changed to Sunday (Feb. 28). Baseball's trip to North Carolina for the weekend was cancelled; women's tennis vs. Temple on Saturday was cancelled while the women's tennis match vs. Manhattan was changed to 11:30 a.m. at Litchenberg Tennis Center. Amazing what a little snow can do - check out all our changes on www.goArmysports.com.
It has been awhile since I have seen snow that we have experienced the last two days. It reminds me of my childhood days when winter storms were the norm. Today I was reminded of the good "old days" and how I don't miss the shoveling. I live next to Wilson Gate next to West Point. The Gate is now permanently closed but when I was a kid they opened it for special occasions like home football games. The rule was you had to be home before the game was over because you could not get across the street as the cars came two and three abreast.
While living at the dead end of a street has its advantages, it also has disadvantages in winter because you get the snow from the whole street when they plow and there is no place to put it except in front of Wilson Gate which is where my garage is situated.
I was out shoveling various times during the night but what when I got up this morning I was devastated because I could not get near my garage and the snow was piled in front - it is heavy and my arms can only throw so high. Right now you can hardly see the gate because of all the snow, and if we get any more I don't know what I will do.
I was up early this morning expecting to be able to get to the office, but half the roads were not plowed so I took my dog Bear for a walk. He is a golden retriever who thinks everyone wants to greet him and rushes over towards them while I am trying to keep him back. He is a solid boy and doesn't realize his own strength when he drags me from one lamp pole to another in his quest to find the perfect one. I have an enclosed yard but it is full of snow and I had to make a path around the house for the dog.
Anyway tomorrow is another day and maybe we will have more snow. I just don't know what we will do with it. Do I miss the old winters - just for a moment but I could always buy a postcard because right now I have to go out and do more shoveling.
