Thursday, Feb. 11 - The Big Dig!!!
February 11, 2010 | General
Serves me right for bragging on my last edition of the Black Knight Blog that it was early February and there was no snow on the ground around these parts. Even though that varmint Punxsutawney Phil climbed out of his den, saw his shadow and proceeded to predict six more weeks of winter, I tempted fate, spit in old Phil's scrunchy little furry face. See Feb. 2 edition of BKB.
So what did that little rodent do? He curled back in his hole, settled in for a few more weeks and chuckled in his sleep while Mother Nature took care of the rest, dropping a foot of snow on the tri-state area yesterday. Made for an interesting commute to and from work yesterday and last night, but I'm happy to report that all precincts are accounted for and everyone in the athletic department arrived home last night and back to work today safely.
Bob Beretta with you at the Black Knight Blog controls this afternoon. I apologize for the tardiness of this entry, but yesterday's big snow and subsequent big dig threw me off a little. Truth be known, I am grinding on my baseball media guide, trying to hit my self-imposed deadline of tomorrow, and realized I had yet to post a BKB entry.
Busy time of the year around these parts with the winter sports in full swing and the spring, that's right, spring sports gearing up. In fact, while the baseball team officially opens its season next Friday in North Carolina, the women's softball team begins play this weekend in Atlanta. Nothing says baseball or softball like 12 inches of freshly fallen snow blanketing the ground. Thank goodness for the Foley Athletic Center. It's always about 65 degrees with no wind, and of course, no snow, inside that fabulous edifice.
Speaking of the Foley Center, our football team will begin spending some quality time back inside its spring home beginning next week. Practice begins on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and we'll have complete coverage throughout the spring here at www.goARMYsports.com. While we won't cover every practice, we'll have either a written report or a multi-media report following nearly every session.
Big week for us next week with the beginning of spring football practice, the lacrosse home opener versus VMI on Saturday, and of course the annual Army-Navy basketball doubleheader. We are expecting a capacity crowd for that twinbill at Christl Arena, so if you haven't purchased your tickets yet, be sure to do so before it's too late.
Well, gotta run back to the baseball guide. Now that we're all dug out from the snow, it's time to start thinking baseball. Six days until pitchers and catchers, no matter what that old Phil character says. Even Mother Nature can't change that.
Until next time, be well and GO ARMY!!!
