December 30, 2010 | Wrestling
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomores Jordan Thome and Daniel Young both turned in eighth-place finishes as the Army wrestling team placed 20th at the Southern Scuffle on Thursday. The Black Knights accumulated 33.50 points to conclude the two-day event near the middle of the 34-team field.
Thome, who authored a 4-1 record yesterday, posted a pair of pins to advance in the 133-pound consolation bracket. The Troy, Ohio, native got past North Carolina's Patrick Owens in 1 minute, 17 seconds, before taking Minnesota's David Thorn to the mat in 1:28. Thome then lost consecutive decisions to settle for the eighth-place finish.
Young forged a 3-1 mark on the first day of the tournament and began the day in the consolation draw. He started the second day of competition by defeating George Mason's Brandon Bucher (7-4) and edging Kent State's Tommy Sasfy (5-4). Young then dropped back-to-back bouts en route to placing eighth at 149 pounds.
The only other Army wrestlers competing on the second day of the Southern Scuffle were junior Jimmy Rafferty and sophomore Connor Hanafee. Rafferty, who went 3-0 yesterday to move into the championship quarterfinals at 157 pounds, was forced to medically forfeit both of his bouts today. Hanafee, meanwhile, dropped his only match of the day in the consolation draw at 133 pounds.
Top-ranked Cornell and Penn State tied for the team title as each school racked up 151.50 points. Oregon State finished third with 132.50 points, with Michigan (132.00 points) and Minnesota (126.50) rounding out the top five.
