Black Knight Blog: Tuesday, Nov. 9
November 09, 2010 | General
Greetings from West Point on a chilly Tuesday in the Hudson Valley for today's edition of the Black Knight Blog. Christian Anderson blogging with you today. I had the privilege of working alongside our very own Mady Salvani last weekend during the Patriot League Women's Soccer Tournament, which was hosted at West Point. Although the Army women lost a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to Lehigh in the tournament championship, I was impressed with the effort put forth by the Black Knights. Army won a thrilling 1-0 overtime game over Colgate in the semifinals on Friday to advance to Sunday's title game. Army certainly proved a lot of people wrong this year. The Black Knights were picked seventh in the Patriot League preseason poll, but went on to win the regular season title. Hats off to head coach Stefanie Golan, her staff and her team.
The Army sprint football team capped its season last Friday night with its first victory over Navy since 2003, defeating the Midshipmen, 32-30, in Annapolis. It marked the team's first win in Annapolis since 1999. Congratulations to head coach Mike McElrath, his coaching staff and the team for a job well done! The win also gave the Black Knights a share of the Collegiate Sprint Football League title.
Army's volleyball team completed a season sweep of Navy on Friday as well, defeating the Mids 3-1 at Gillis Field House. Congrats to head coach Alma Kovaci, her staff and her team on the victory! Army is now 5-3 versus Navy this fall, having picked up two wins in volleyball and one each in sprint football, women's soccer and women's cross country.
The Army wrestling team, one of the two winter sports that I work with during the winter months, began its first season under head coach Joe Heskett last weekend at the Pentagon Duals. The Black Knights split matches with American and Franklin & Marshall. Army begins its six-match home slate this evening (Nov. 9) with a dual against Drexel. The action at Gillis Field House will get under way at 7 p.m., so come out and support the team!
We are entering into a very hectic time of year in Army Athletic Communications with the Army-Notre Dame and Army-Navy football games fast approaching and the beginning of the men's and women's basketball seasons. Throw in the Thanksgiving holiday and you have the recipe for a very busy time for everyone involved. It is definitely one of the things that I truly enjoy about working in athletics, though. We get the opportunity to be involved with these high-profile events from a behind-the-scenes perspective.
Well, it's almost time to get ready for Coach Ellerson's weekly football press conference so I better wrap this up.
Until next time, Go ARMY!
