A very good late-morning to all of you readers out there. Tracy Nelson with you today at the midway point in the week. I thought I would spend a little time today touching on an event that my colleagues and I were fortunate enough to attend last night.
Army's partnership with CBS College Sports has been phenomenal thus far and last night was a testament to just how much publicizing and highlighting the academies means to the network. If you're not aware, this year CBSC is the official network for all academy football. Here at Army, we have Dave Ryan and Jason Seyhorn in the booth each home game to bring you the live coverage. Although I work all home games and am unable to watch the actual broadcasts, I never hear anything but good feedback about these guys.
In fact, Dave Ryan served as the emcee at last night's Salute to the Academies function, which was held at the Intrepid in New York. It was a beautiful night to be on the Hudson and my first visit to the Intrepid. What a sight. I would like to go back during the day and be able to really see the views from the flight deck with the sun overhead. It was a lovely evening and a good time had by all.
The main event came during a special screening of CBSC's feature pieces on each academy. You can catch Army's 30-minute show this Thursday at 8:30 p.m. The crew delved into the cadet lives of both Andrew Rodriguez and Jared Hassin, taking the viewer through field training and life as an Army football player. We saw about a 10-minute clip of it last night and I can't wait to tune in tomorrow (or just set the DVR - what would my life be without it?).
We headed back to the Hudson Valley last night and today is another day in the office. Things are getting pretty busy around here with the dreaded fall-winter overlap. While volleyball is still in full swing and into the meat of the Patriot League season, it's hard to believe that Dave Magarity and his women's basketball troops are just over two weeks away from opening the 2010-11 season. Ron Mergenthaler, who may ring a bell to locals as a former writer for the Middletown Times Herald-Record, sat down with Dave and wrote a nice piece that can be found here.
Volleyball heads to Holy Cross this weekend looking to extend a five-match win streak. Head coach Alma Kovaci and her club sit in second place with an 8-1 conference mark and are coming off a couple of big wins at Lafayette and Lehigh last weekend. Army swept this week's Patriot League awards as senior setter Karyn Powell and freshman middle blocker Megan Wilton picked up some well-deserved honors. Click here to read more about them.
I think that's going to do it for now. Plenty of things still left in the hopper on my growing Wednesday to-do list. It's VMI week folks, so let's hope for another football W on Saturday!
