August 24, 2009 | General
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army Athletic Communications staff recently picked up four publication awards for excellence in media guide design, writing and overall production. Presented annually by College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA), Army combined to win two national citations, along with two at the district level.
CoSIDA presents awards for media guides, posters and yearbooks in all three NCAA classifications. Each category has a separate content coordinator. Awards for football media guides at the Football Bowl Subdivision level have not yet been announced.
Written, designed and edited by assistant director for athletic communications, Tim Volkmann, the 2008-09 Army Wrestling media guide was named fourth "Best in Nation." The 68-page guide was bested only by Wisconsin, Illinois and Oregon State, in that order, as the top wrestling media guides in the country.
Also garnering national recognition was the official 2008 Army Football Poster, which was named the second-best fall poster at the Division I level. Designed by Marc Tolen of Creative Graphics, the poster came in second to Nebraska's football poster.
The 2009 Army baseball media guide was named "Best in District I." The 116-page book featured the 2009 Patriot League Championship club and earned district honors for a second-straight year. The 2009 Army volleyball media guide also earned honors at the district level, as it was judged second in District I.
Senior Associate Athletic Director Bob Beretta manages the athletic communications department, along with his duties overseeing all of Army's external operations. The athletic communications staff consists of Brian Gunning, Annie Holliday, Tracy Nelson, Mady Salvani, Tim Volkmann, Ryan Yanoshak and Dallas Miller.
With the help of Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing, Multi-Media and Broadcasting Rich DeMarco, Beretta's external operations team was also honored at the annual National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) in June, bringing home three awards for marketing and promotional efforts. DeMarco accepted awards for New-Revenue Generating Idea (ACU football helmet auction), Single-Day Attendance Promotion (Bob Knight bobblehead doll giveaway) and Ticket Sales Piece (football ticket brochure).
