What is Twitter?
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read each others' updates, known as “tweets,” which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters, displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to other users - known as followers - who have subscribed to them. Each Twitter post (or “tweet”) is displayed on the users’ profile page and can also be received via a cell phone text, instant message, email, on social networking sites such as Facebook, or on the users’ Twitter page itself.
More specifically, Army provides multiple “tweets” per day depending on the volume of information. In addition, live updates from select athletic events throughout the year are also provided. Click here for more information.
How do I sign up for Twitter?
Go to www.twitter.com and use the main page to create a username and password in the appropriate fields. You now own a Twitter account.
How do I “follow” Army Athletics on Twitter?
After you sign up and login to your own Twitter account, you will need to go to the Army Athletics page, which is twitter.com/ArmyAthletics and click “Follow” in the upper left-hand corner. You are now a follower of Army Athletics and are able to receive updates from that page.
What does it mean to “follow” Army Athletics on Twitter?
Becoming someone or something’s follower simply means that you are receiving their Twitter updates. When following a particular person or organization, every time a new message is posted, it will appear on the home page of your Twitter account. New messages are added to your home page chronologically and you always get the updates in real time. When you login to your Twitter account, you are greeted with a list of the latest updates from those whom you have chosen to “follow.”
How do I receive updates?
Twitter allows the user to pick and customize how you receive your messages. Users may be alerted via the web, text messages, instant messages, of Facebook, email and RSS feeds. You can also download a wealth of applications for your particular cell phone, iPhone, etc. by clicking here.
Fans of Army sports do not need to sign up for a Twitter account in order to read updates from Army Athletics. Users may simply click on the “Follow Army on Twitter” button below the main left-hand menu of www.goARMYsports.com. Those individuals who do create their own profiles, however, can receive instantaneous updates using a variety of applications.
For those fans that elect to receive text message updates from Twitter, that is an option that can easily be turned on and off at one’s convenience to avoid going over one’s cell phone company text message allowance.
