June 23, 2009 | General
WEST POINT, N.Y. Army Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson was elected Third Vice President of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) in conjunction with the association’s 44th-annual convention held last week at the Orlando World Marriott Resort.
Since taking the reins of the Army Athletic department in December of 2004, the program has flourished both on and off the field. Army has sent 19 intercollegiate athletic teams to the NCAAs, captured its first National Championship in more than 50 years, witnessed the revitalization of its hockey and men’s basketball programs, and experienced unparalleled success in several others, including baseball, women’s tennis and women’s basketball.
This past fall, the Black Knights women’s soccer team became West Point’s ninth different intercollegiate program to advance to the NCAAs under Anderson’s watch. The spring saw the women’s tennis team make its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 11 years, while the baseball team eliminated two teams and nearly upset tournament top-seed and host Texas at the NCAA Regional in Austin. Army finished first on the men’s side of the Patriot League’s Presidents’ Cup competition, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, while a total of six Army teams claimed conference titles during the year.
Off the field, construction of the Foley Athletic Center, a spacious indoor practice facility for football, was completed in the winter of 2007. During Anderson’s time at West Point, Randall Hall, which houses offices, locker rooms and team rooms for men’s and women’s basketball, as well as luxury suites that overlook historic Michie Stadium, was also unveiled. Army’s fabled football home received additional state-of-the-art amenities last summer with the installation of a new FieldTurf playing surface and a sparkling 30-foot-by-50-foot scoreboard, complete with a 20-foot-by-50-foot high-definition video board.
In December, Anderson led the search that resulted in the hiring of Rich Ellerson as Army’s 36th head football coach.
Since his arrival at the Academy, Anderson has brokered major broadcast agreements for Army’s football program with ESPN and WABC Radio (770-AM), as well as aligning the Black Knights’ athletics teams with Nike, as part of a significant apparel deal, and Learfield Sports Properties. The Army “A” Club has continued to flourish under Anderson’s leadership, establishing school records for annual giving during each of his three years at the Academy.
Anderson had previously served as chairman for the NACA Division I-A Athletic Directors McClendon Minority Scholarship Steering Committee and was a member of the NCAA’s Basketball Academic Enhancement Group. He also became the chairman of the Division I Men’s Basketball Issues Committee last September.
Before starting his tenure at West Point, Anderson, who ranks as the first African-American to hold the position of director of athletics at West Point, spent two years as executive associate athletic director at Oregon State University following a five-year stint as executive associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of California.
Anderson graduated from San Francisco State University in 1979 with a bachelor’s degree in political science. He is also a 1981 graduate of the Xerox Corporation’s New Manager School and the Xerox Marketing School in 1986. He completed the executive management program at the Sports Management Institute in 1995.
Kevin and his wife, Moira, have four children: daughters, Olivia and Michaela; and sons, Kevin Jr. and Chauncey.
Also elected to serve NACDA for the 2009-10 term were President Randy Spetman, director of athletics at Florida State University, 1st Vice President Dave Roach, director of athletics at Colgate University; 2nd Vice President Dan Guerrero, director of athletics at UCLA; and David Stair, director of athletics at Evangel University, to the fourth year of a five-year term as secretary.
Executive Committee members selected as at-large representatives include athletics directors Warde Manuel, University at Buffalo; Ed McLean, Fayetteville State University; John Scarpino, Seminole Community College; Joe Tubb, South Plains College; and John Volek, Sierra College. Missy Conboy, deputy athletics director, University of Notre Dame; Patty Viverito, commissioner, Missouri Valley Football Conference; and Dan Beebe, commissioner, Big 12 Conference were selected as at-large representatives.
Now in its 45th year, NACDA is the professional and educational association for more than 6,500 college athletics administrators at more than 1,600 institutions throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. More than 2,300 athletics administrators annually attend the NACDA Convention. Additionally, NACDA administers 11 professional associations for the separate business units that report directly to the athletics directors.
