April 21, 2008 | General
WEST POINT, N.Y. A Patriot League Championship and a tournament victory equate to Army Athletic Association Co-Athletes of the Week.
Freshman golfer Matt Krembel and junior tennis standout Sarah Giles-Madden share the honor this week after a pair of impressive performances.
Giles-Madden keyed the Army women’s tennis team to a fourth-straight Patriot League title by winning the deciding third singles match en route to a 4-3 Army win over Bucknell on Sunday afternoon at Malek Courts. With the title match tied at 3-3, all eyes turned to Giles-Madden and Bucknell’s Lauren Lucido, who had beaten Giles-Madden just a week earlier in the regular season match-up. Lucido took the first set, 6-3, but Giles-Madden rebounded to win the second and third sets, 6-4, 6-3, respectively.
Giles-Madden’s performance earned her the John “Pat” Rooney Award as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. She is the first player since 2003 to win that award outright. Giles-Madden is the first women’s tennis player this season to collect Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week plaudits.
Army was crowned the Patriot League Champions for an unprecedented fourth straight year and ninth overall. The win punched the Black Knights’ ticket to the NCAA Regionals, which are played during the weekend of May 9-11 at campus sites around the country. The NCAA selection and pairings will be announced via ESPNews on Tuesday, April 29, at 2 p.m.
Krembel meanwhile fired a 10-under-par to win his first collegiate tournament. He opened the Mount St. Mary’s Spring Invitational with a 74 and then posted back-to-back 66s for a three-round total of 206, an Army 54-hole record. His 66s were the best scores of the tournament and led to a six-shot victory in just his ninth event.
Krembel’s score helped the Black Knights to a second-place finish in the event with a season-best score of 883 at the par-72, 7,027-yard Quail Valley Golf Course. Krembel is the first golfer this year to be honored by the Army athletic Association this year.
Krembel is the first Army golfer to win an event since Austin Luher took top honors at the URI Invitational in 2006.
Army will compete in the Patriot League Championships, this weekend in Bethlehem, Pa., at historic Saucon Valley Country Club.
