Greetings, everyone. So it’s been a while since I’ve written, and for this please accept my most heartfelt apologies. It’s a combination of exhaustion, sleeping, and copious amounts of Xbox playing that led to me failing my faithful readers. Stone me at your will, but I hope it won’t come to that.
Of late, I have not been able to write, mostly because hitting the ball out of my shadow had become increasingly difficult for me. As one may guess, the inability to accomplish this noted feat probably does not suit one very well if that particular individual is attempting to play collegiate golf. As such, I got to cool my heels and work on my game some. While the good news is that I did manage to scrounge up a swing from the doldrums that actually shows some promise, the horrible news is that I was unable to give first-hand accounts of the shenanigans of the Army golf team.
This last weekend, however, I traveled with the team to Maryland for Towson University’s spring tournament. Patriot Leagues are three weeks away, so preparation for that specifically has begun in earnest. What is different about Patriot Leagues compared to other tournaments, aside from the automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals if we win, is that we play with six people and count the four best scores. In most of our regular tournaments, we travel and play with five people and take the best four scores from them. This additional player usually results in lower scoring for Patriot Leagues, and it is also the reason Coach Clevenger will take different people to tournaments directly leading up to Patriot Leagues because it allows everyone to have tournament play close to the actual championships.
For Towson’s tournament this weekend, we played a different course than in previous years. The site that we played was Prospect Bay Country Club. It’s a good course with a few quirks here and there, but all in all for this time of year was in very good shape. Our team performed decently the first day. We had three good scores from Sam, Matt, and Mark, which were 72, 73, and 76 respectively. Unfortunately, Joey and I did not contribute much so our team ended the first day eighth of 21 teams. The second day we played worse, not enjoying the low scores of the first and still shooting some relatively high numbers. Our rank in the tournament dropped from eighth to 12th, which is where we finished.
The feelings in the van headed back on our five-and-one-half hour trip back to West Point were pretty lukewarm. We wanted to play better and post some better numbers, yet we still realize that we have not played many rounds this season due to the weather in the Northeast. I feel our team is improving in confidence and playing abilities, and I have absolute faith that when we need to put up the scores three weeks from now, we will be ready. Last year we lost to Bucknell by two shots. TWO SHOTS! From personal experience, I can say that feeling is a pretty lousy one. We are going to everything in our power to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
Go Army Golf!
Patrick
