ARMY RALLIES TO EARN SPLIT AGAINST CORNELL
Barnes Connell (Columbia, S.C./A.C. Flora) walked and scored the winning run on a throwing error by Cornell pitcher Blake Hamilton with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning and Army overcame an early two-run deficit as the Black Knights gained a split of their non-conference doubleheader with the Big Red Saturday afternoon at blustery Doubleday Field.
After suffering a 2-0 seven-inning setback in the opener, Army battled back for a 3-2 victory in 10 innings in the nightcap.
Senior right-hander Jim Hyland (2-2) outpitched Army ace Nick Hill (Bluff City, Tenn./Sullivan East) (2-2) in the opener, firing a four-hit shutout against the Black Knights. Hyland was in complete command throughout, yielding just four singles. He allowed only two base runners to reach scoring position all day and did not allow a single Black Knight to advance to third base. Hyland, who struck out four and walked one, retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced.
ARMY CLOSES WEEKEND SERIES WITH 16-5 POUNDING OF CORNELL
Milan Dinga (Tampa, Fla./Robinson) went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and four runs batted in, and Army sent 13 batters to the plate en route to a seven-run first inning as the Black Knights cruised past Cornell 16-5, taking the rubber game of the teams’ three-game weekend series, Sunday afternoon at Doubleday Field.
Following a doubleheader split that featured a pair of tightly played contests on Saturday, Army wasted little time deciding matters early against the Big Red on Sunday. The Black Knights chased Cornell starter Bryce Klinesteker after the junior right-hander faced six batters but failed to record an out.
Klinesteker (0-1) battled control problems, walking Army’s first three batters to load the bases with no outs. Chris Simmons (Prairieville, La./Dutchtown) smashed a hard grounder just inside the third base bag to deliver the first two runs of the game. Kyle Stramara (Fort Hood, Texas/Killeen) grounded to second base with runners at first and second, but Big Red second baseman Jimmy Heinz’s throw pulled shortstop Scott Hardinger off the bag as the Big Red attempted to turn a double-play. Stramara was also safe on the play when he just beat Hardinger’s return throw to first base as the Black Knights re-loaded the bases. Bo Cipra (Houston, Texas/Spring Woods) ended Klinesteker’s afternoon on the mound by lining an RBI single to left for a 3-0 Army advantage.

ARMY RALLIES FOR 5-3 NIGHTCAP DECISION TO EARN SPLIT WITH MARIST
Freshman third baseman Erin McClain (Ventura, Calif./Ventura) went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs, and pitcher Veronica Barth (Granada Hills, Calif./Chaminade) held Marist to one hit over the final four frames as Army rallied for a come-from-behind 5-3 nightcap decision Saturday afternoon to gain a split of a softball doubleheader. The Red Foxes snapped a 2-2 tie with a pair of unearned runs in the top of the eighth, then nipped the Black Knights’ rally in the home half to hold on for a 4-2 win in the opener.
The nightcap win was the 350th in head coach Jim Flowers’ career as the Black Knights’ made their home debut at the Army Softball Complex, where they show a 42-29 mark following today’s split.
Marist staked pitcher Caitlin Carpentier to a 2-0 lead on Jessica Green’s two-run homer in the first inning of the nightcap. Carpentier (2-5) kept Army’s bats quiet striking out the first eight batters she faced holding the Black Knights hitless over the first three innings.
ARMY DEFEATS HARTFORD 1-0 IN FIRST GAME, BOWS TO HAWKS IN SECOND
Senior right-hander Chris Stauffer (Pembroke Pines, Fla./American Heritage) went the distance on a five-hitter, struck out two and issued no walks in a 1-0 blanking of Hartford in the opener, but the Hawks earned the split of the non-conference softball doubleheader with a 4-1 nightcap decision Sunday afternoon at the Army Softball Complex.
The Black Knights scored their lone run in the second inning when freshman Kelsie August (Alanson, Mich./Petoskey), who drew a walk, and moved around on Cassie Ellington’s (Valrico, Fla./Durant) single and a fielder’s choice, crossed on an illegal pitch by Brittney Stratton in accounting for their lone run. Army reloaded the bases with its second walk in that frame with one out, but Stratton got out of that bases-loaded jam on a strikeout and a foul play catch by the left fielder.
Stauffer (2-9) stranded leadoff runner Kristin Cericola at third after she ripped a double in the first inning, then kept Hartford in check the rest of the game as she retired 17 of the next 21 batters she faced. Hartford reached second base just twice over the final six frames, and each time Stauffer nipped the Hawks’ rally.
