WEST POINT, N.Y. - Girl Scout Troop 509 of Pine Bush was treated to a visit from members of the Army women's soccer team on Tuesday night as part of a program to discuss life goals and ambitions. Juniors Jessica Congemi and Elizabeth Costello were joined by 2nd Lt. Leigh Kosco as part of the Army Athletic Association's Community Outreach Program.
"It's great that we get opportunities like this to interact and talk to young girls from the area about soccer and women's sports in general," said Congemi. "We really enjoyed talking to them because it reminded us of when we were that age and how we were just as excited to get involved in sports and various activities that we had a passion for."
The trio fielded questions from the scouts about how they got started playing soccer, the importance of teamwork and the role athletics has played in their personal and educational development.
Assistant Troop Leader Jennifer Carter felt the program could not have gone better. "The girls had so much fun," Carter said. "It was great to see them involved in conversations with the players, and I could see that the night made a great impact. The girls can't wait to attend an Army women's soccer game next season."
Meanwhile, for Kosco, the night gave her an opportunity to make an impression. "Being able to inspire young girls and guide them towards the right path for their future is exciting. When I was their age, the last thing I was thinking about was college and how to make the right choices, and they are probably thinking the same thing. Hopefully, they got just a little something out of it that will motive them to do something they love."
