Rifle Team Fires a 4656 At NCAA Qualifier

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. Junior Brian Kern fired a personal best 590 in air rifle and Chris Abalo topped Army in smallbore with a 585 as the Black Knights’ rifle team compiled a 4656 aggregate score at their NCAA Qualifier hosted by the University of the Sciences at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range Friday evening.
Joining Kern in rounding out Army’s four-man air rifle unit that fired a 2343 were Abalo (589), David Amiot (585) and team captain John Fiddes (579).
Kern (573), Amiot (577) and Abalo (585) were joined on the smallbore unit by Mike Jablonski (578) as that foursome teamed to post a 2313 composite.
Junior Matthew Hamilton fired personal bests in both disciplines, registering a 581 mark in smallbore and 578 in air rifle, competing individually
Every Division I rifle program in the country will be firing at various sites this weekend looking to make the cut for one of the Top 8 team spots as well as individually in each discipline for the NCAA Championships, which will be hosted by Alaska Fairbanks, March 9-10.
Army, ranked No. 3 in the nation, has met the NCAA qualifying standard the past three years, capturing the NCAA title in 2005 and the bronze last year.
The Black Knights (9-2) close out their dual meet schedule next Saturday, Feb. 17, when they host Navy in the “Star” match at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
