December 07, 2007 | General
NEWTON, Mass. Army Director of Athletics Kevin Anderson was honored by the All-American Football Foundation Thursday evening at the 88th Banquet of Champions in Newton, Mass. Anderson was one of five Athletic Directors recognized with the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award.
Since he was introduced as Army’s Director of Athletics on Dec. 13, 2004, the Academy’s intercollegiate athletic program has enjoyed immense success both on and off the “fields of friendly strife.”
During his three years along the banks of the Hudson, Army has sent 13 of its intercollegiate athletic teams to the NCAAs, captured its first National Championship in more than 50 years, witnessed the revitalization of its hockey and men’s basketball programs, and experienced unparalleled success in several others, such as baseball and women’s basketball.
While shaping its finest performance in more than a decade, Army’s athletic program won a National Championship in rifle, sent a record seven teams to postseason appearances, defeated Navy in the year-long series for the first time since 1978 and forged an overall winning percentage of .582 during the 2004-05 academic year, Anderson’s first at the Black Knights’ helm.
Off the field, the Academy recently completed construction of the Foley Athletic Center, a spacious indoor practice facility for football. During Anderson’s time at West Point, Randall Hall, which houses offices, locker rooms and team rooms for men’s and women’s basketball, as well as luxury suites that overlook Michie Stadium, was also unveiled.
Since his arrival at the Academy, Anderson has brokered major broadcast agreements for Army Football with ESPN and WABC (770-AM) Radio, as well as aligning the Black Knights’ athletics teams with Nike, as part of a significant apparel deal, and Learfield Sports Properties.
Anderson ranks as the first African-American to hold the position of director of athletics at the U.S. Military Academy.
Others receiving the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award from the All-American Football Foundation on Thursday include Jack Hayes of Hofstra University, Rudy Keeling, formerly of Emerson College, John McCutcheon of the University of Massachusetts and Paula Sullivan of Stonehill College.
