Army West Point Athletics

Black Knight Spotlight - Courtney Wright (Women's Basketball)
December 13, 2007 | General
1. What does it mean to you to be able to play women's basketball at West Point?
It is an honor. Its being part of something bigger than myself and unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before coming to West Point.
2. What is the best thing about being an athlete at West Point?
The lifelong friends I’ve made. I’m closer to this group of girls than I have ever been with a group of people. I have had the chance to meet people and see things that I never imagined possible.
3. What is the most difficult thing?
Juggling academics and our military requirements along with being a division I athlete is the most difficult thing. It is an incredible challenge to balance the three and excel in each.
4. What is your fondest sports memory that you have had since arriving at West Point?
When the buzzer sounded in the Patriot League Championship my plebe year. Seeing coach Maggie Dixon on the shoulders of the football players, and going to the NCAA tourney.
5. What adjustments have you had to make since arriving here?
a. Socially
Being able to enjoy a limited free time. Since coming here, I am much more able to make a good time out of any situation. Being stuck on post and in the barracks for extended has made me become more creative and enjoy freedom when I have it.
b. Athletically
I’ve had to adjust to bigger, faster, stronger competition.
c. Academically
Having to balance 21 credit hours plus travelling, missing school for games, and handling all of the military requirements in addition.
6. Why did you decide to come to West Point? What were some of the deciding factors? Who or what influenced your decision?
My mom was the ultimate reason I even considered Army. The remarkable educational experience, playing a division I sport, and generally setting me up for success later in life.
7. What do you enjoy doing during your “down time”?
Every Wednesday the posts (forwards and centers) on our team get together, order pizza, and watch America’s Next Top Model. It is the highlight of my week, and I make sure I have time for it each week.
8. Which branch are you planning on entering following graduation?
Engineers, Air Defense Artillery, or Military Police
9. What makes athletes at West Point unique from athletes at other schools?
The ultimate reason for attending college. What we have committed to after our college experience I believe makes us more well-rounded and keeps our perspectives on life clearer.
10. What is the best thing about being a cadet?
The people I’ve been able meet and the unbelievable things I’ve been able to do. Meeting prominent figures, travelling around the country, and building relationships that I know will remain strong for many years to come.
