WEST POINT, N.Y. In keeping with the “blackout” slated for Friday’s home football showdown versus Rutgers, fans can now purchase the official Army “Twelfth Knight” long-sleeved Nike t-shirts for $20 and rally towels for $2. Both items are available at the Army Athletic Association Gift Shop at the West Point Visitor’s Center, located at South Post, or at Michie Stadium on game night.
West Point officials have designed the black tee-shirt (mock-up pictured at right) and gold “battle rag” to support the blackout initiative. The $20 rate for the shirt will remain at that price, while the spirit towels will only be available for $2 until the end of the business day on Thursday. After that point, they can be purchased for $3.
Through a special combined offer, fans can purchase both the shirt and towel online via the Army Athletic Association’s official Web site at www.goARMYsports.com for $20. Those ordering “blackout” shirts online before the Rutgers game will also receive the spirit towel free as a part of the package. Pre-ordered shirts are not available for delivery and can only be picked up at West Point on Wednesday, Nov. 7, from 7 a..m. to 4 p.m. in Thayer Hall, Room 444.
Fans and cadets are encouraged to wear black outerwear, such as long sleeve shirts, jackets, hats and sweatshirts to the Black Knights’ evening contest against the Scarlet Knights in order to display their support and unity for the Army team.
“This is a great example of loyal fans taking the initiative to support Army sports,” said Kevin Anderson, West Point’s Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “We want to encourage our Black Knights with a loud sea of black in the stands. In the end, though, it’s about more than football. And it’s about more than sports, although we want this kind of support for all our cadet-athletes.
“This idea shows how we band together in our vital enterprise of forging leaders,” Anderson added.
In addition to the Michie Stadium “blackout,” West Point officials are asking USMA employees to don black spirit attire to work on Nov. 9 to show their support of the Black Knights. The game will be televised nationally by ESPN2, with a kickoff scheduled for shortly after 8 p.m.
A limited amount of “obstructed view” tickets for the Army-Rutgers contest remain available, with all seats located in the first four rows of Michie Stadium. Tickets to the Rutgers game, as well as the Black Knights’ home finale against Tulsa on Nov. 17, are currently on sale at the Army Ticket Office or online at www.goARMYsports.com. Fans wishing to purchase tickets over the phone by credit card can do so by calling 1-877-TIX-ARMY.
