Gene Marshall joined Kevin Anderson's executive staff as Deputy Athletic Director in July 2005.
As deputy athletic director at Army, Marshall is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the the intercollegiate sports program. He serves as the Chief Operating Officer for all 25 intercollegiate sports with direct oversight of football, men's and women's basketball, ice hockey and lacrosse as well as adminstrative oversite for the Senior Women's Adminitrator, facilities, operations, marketing and promotions, logistics and external operations as well as all NCAA admissions and compliance issues. Summer camp operation is also under his direction.
Marshall completed a highly successful seven-year term as Director of Athletics at nearby Ramapo College (N.J.) where he oversaw the successful rebuilding of its athletic program, including six-straight years of the total teams win/loss record of at least 19 games over .500. Over the past three years, 11 out of the 17 Roadrunner athletic programs participated in postseason play, including softball - NCAA Regionals, track and field - All-America honors and men's basketball - NCAA Elite Eight and Sweet Sixteen. Academically, Ramapo's student-athlete graduation rate increased from 40% to 75% during this seven year period. Marshall also played a key role in the planning and development of the Bill Bradley Sports and Recreation Center. This $26-millon state-of-the-art facility was part of Ramapo's strategic plan to upgrade the athletic facilities.
Marshall also served head women's basketball coach for six years and engineered a successful turnaround of the program. Throughout his six years, his teams advanced to the semifinal round of the ECAC Division III Metro Tournament three times.
A Past President of the Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA), Minority Opportunities Administration Association (MOAA) and National Association for Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), Marshall formerly chaired the NCAA's Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee (MOIC). The committee handles all gender and diversity-related issues for intercollegiate athletics involving Divisions I, II and III, which affect minority student-athletes, administrators and officials.
Prior to arrival at Ramapo, Marshall served as athletic director and head women's basketball coach at the College of Staten Island. While at CSI, he oversaw 10 intercollegiate athletic programs as well as the school's intramural and recreation activities. He also managed the college's new outdoor athletic fields and courts as well as its state-of-the-art indoor sports complex. As head coach in 1996, Marshall led the women's basketball team to the school's third CUNY Tournament championship and first-ever appearance in the NCAA Women's Tournament, while leading the nation in Division III total defense (45.5 ppg.) and field goal percentage defense (.300).
Before his tenure at CSI, Marshall spent 11 years at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y., where he filled a number of roles, including director of athletics; director of intramurals and recreation; coordinator of special events and conference services; interim director of student activities and orientation; Pratt Benjamin Banneker Academy coordinator; special advisor to the president for multi-cultural affairs; head women's volleyball coach and head men's basketball coach.
A 1981 graduate of Northeastern University with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
While at Northeastern, Marshall was a member of the Huskies' men's basketball team. He also served as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater.
Born on July 28, 1958, Marshall resides in Hackensack, N.J. with his wife Phyllis and three children, Jason, Jacqueline and Eugene III.
