December 15, 2006 | General
WEST POINT, N.Y. Army senior midfielder Ashley Emerson was among the 150 student-athletes named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar All-East Region Team with her selection as an honorable mention. It is the third straight year that an Army soccer player earned this honor, joining former teammates Delaney Brown (2004 and 2005) and Julie Jorgensen (2005).
A History major with a 3.78 grade point average, Emerson started all 18 games this season and ranked among the Black Knights’ leaders after spending most of her junior year sidelined because of preseason surgery. The Indianapolis, Ind., native recorded five points and a pair of goals her final year along with tallying the game winner in Army’s 2-0 non-league win over Drexel. Emerson later rallied Army to a 1-1 overtime tie against Holy Cross in the Patriot League opener.
Emerson, who started 38 of 55 matches during her Army career, scored five goals and assisted on four others in tallying 14 points as a four-year letterwinner. A Patriot League second team all-star midfielder her sophomore year and a four-year member of the league’s academic honor roll, Emerson was a candidate for CoSIDA Academic District Honors (University Division) this fall.
A member of the West Point chapter of Phi Alpha Theta (International Honor Society in History) and the Golden International Honour Society, Emerson also recorded the highest grade in Systems Modeling and Design to name a few of the numerous academic honors she has earned as a four-year member of the Dean’s List.
In addition to shining on the pitch and in the classroom, Emerson has held the position as Executive Officer for G Company in the Corps of Cadets and is slated to be a Company Commander for the second term.
Emerson is a two-time recipient of the Distinguished Cadet Award (excellence in academic performance) for academic years 2004-05 and 2005-06. She has also received the Superintendent’s Award (bestowed to cadets for excellence in the academic, military and physical programs along with ranking in the Top 5 percent of their class) twice. Emerson missed out last year after being unable to take the Army Physical Fitness Test due to the injury she suffered on the pitch, but is a candidate to repeat both (Distinguished Cadet and Superintendent’s) awards this year.
Emerson was one of three Patriot League women’s soccer players selected for Scholar All-East Region honors, joining Bucknell’s Shannon Curt and Navy’s Kari Weniger.
