Army West Point Athletics
Erected more than 20 years ago, the Holleder Center now serves as the home of West Point's hockey and basketball programs.
The 131,000-square-foot building, located adjacent to picturesque Michie Stadium, opened on Oct. 1, 1985, after a 30-month construction period. The $16-million building houses Tate Rink, a 2,650-seat arena that serves as the home of the Army ice hockey team, and the 5,043-seat Christl Arena, venue for the men's and women's basketball squads.
Administrative offices for facilities managers and the hockey coaching staff, as well as an athletic training room, are also located in the building.
Construction on new lobby ticket windows, as well as an overall indoor beautification project, was completed in the summer of 1997 to further enchance the beauty and efficiency of the building.
One unique aspect of the Holleder Center is that it has common areas that service both the ice rink and basketball arena. Rest rooms, concession stands, gift shops, ticket windows and officials' locker rooms are among the amenities located in the common areas.
While the building is contemporary in style, plaques and trophy cases inside are devoted to the history of Army athletics.
In addition to hockey and basketball, the center has served as the site for numerous other events. It has served as home to the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association and the Eastern Intercollegiate Gymnastics League championships. In April 2005, the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships were held in Christl Arena, as well as the 2008 NCAA Rifle Championships. Christl Arena has hosted collegiate volleyball tournaments in each of the last four years.
Local high school hockey games, high school district and regional basketball playoff contests, closed circuit boxing telecasts, speed skating competitions and other miscellaneous activities that have been staged at the Holleder Center. In 1991, the U.S. women's volleyball team hosted China in Christl Arena.
