Veale Named to Men’s Eagles Rugby Staff
January 30, 2016 | Men's Rugby
BOULDER, Colo. – Army West Point men's rugby assistant coach Marty Veale has been named an assistant coach for the United States Men's Eagles 15's squad that will be competing in the inaugural Americas Rugby Championship this February and March, it was announced by USA Rugby on Friday.
The Eagles are led by John Mitchell, who was appointed at the beginning of the month and will lead the program through the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
"It is an honor to have been selected for this role," Veale commented. "I look forward to the opportunity to further develop rugby in the United States."
Veale, a long-time professional player, was a standout on the touch line at Old Blue of New York while also taking the pitch at Wasps in England's Premiership. He led one of the country's oldest rugby clubs to two of the last three USA Rugby Division III National Championships, including a 2014 championship victory.
"As a program, we're very proud of Marty," said Army Rugby Head Coach Matt Sherman. "He is deserving of this opportunity and will be a valuable contributor to the United States National Team. We are honored to have one of the best coaches in the country within our program."
The U.S. kicks off its 2016 slate hosting Argentina on Saturday, Feb. 6, in Houston before welcoming Canada on Saturday, Feb. 13, in Austin, Texas. The final home match for the Eagles comes on Saturday, Feb. 20, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. as they face Chile. The team then heads to Sao Paolo, Brazil, on Saturday, Feb. 27, before continuing south to go against Uruguay on Saturday, March 5, from Montevideo.
