Rifle Bows To No. 7 Ohio State
October 25, 2015 | Rifle
DAYTON, Ohio – Josh Martin earned medalist honors in smallbore, but No. 7 Ohio State edged the Army West Point rifle team, 2312-2301, in that discipline, then sealed it with a 2356-2331 in air rifle en route to a 4669-4633 decision at the Lt. Hugh W. Wylie Range Sunday afternoon.
The No. 11 Black Knights suffered their second straight loss (1-2) with Ohio State improving to 5-1 following its sweep of Army and UTEP.
Martin, who earned first-place honors in smallbore (586), bested his previous season high by six points in recording the highest team score thus far in that discipline. Joining him on the scoring unit were freshman Nathan Brewer (575), junior Danielle Cuomo (571) and senior Alyssa Gestl (570) combining for a 2302 in posting the second highest team score this season.
"Josh (Martin) had a great smallbore performance," said Army first-year head coach Web Wright. "He made a break through with kneeling that set the tone for the rest of his performance. He had the high score of the match today."
Junior team captain Allen Solida turned in Army's second best score, tying for fourth place behind a season-best 577 firing individually.
The Buckeyes dominated air rifle claiming medalist and runner-up honors in taking four of the top five spots to complete the sweep with Drew Cheezum earning medalist honors (594) and Remington Lyman next at 592.
Cuomo earned third-place honors firing a 587, two shy of her career high, and that mark ranks second highest on the team. Gestl chipped in with a 584 followed by Martin (583) and Brewer (577) in rounding out Army's scoring unit.
"I think the team was a little down after the match today," added Wright, "but I attribute that to knowing that we did not meet our potential today. In the way home it was a little quiet."
The Black Knights close out their four-match road slate next weekend when they visit Great America Rifle Conference rival Nebraska (Nov. 1). The Cornhuskers are ranked No. 8 nationally.
BULLSEYE: Army's travel squad this weekend was made up of one senior (Alyssa Gestl), three juniors (Allen Solida, Marvin Lewis, and Danielle Cuomo), a sophomore (Josh Martin) and a freshman (Nathan Brewer) … Cuomo, Martin and Allen Solida fired season highs … Cuomo posted a 587 in air rifle and Martin and Solida topped season bests in smallbore with a 586 and 577, respectively.
