Sharpshooters Fall To No. 6 Memphis
October 18, 2015 | Rifle
MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Alyssa Gestl, Danielle Cuomo, Marvin Lewis and Nathan Brewer each ranked among the leaders in their respective disciplines, but it wasn't enough as host and No. 6 ranked Memphis defeated the No. 13 Army West Point rifle team 4656-4642 in a Great America Rifle Conference match (GARC) at Rangemaster Sunday.
The Black Knights, opening their season on the road this weekend, stand 1-1 in the conference and overall, while Memphis moved to 1-0 in both in its dual opener.
Juniors Lewis and Cuomo each fired a 578 in smallbore to tie for third-place honors as they trailed medalist Jack Berhost (582) and Amy Fister (579) of Memphis. Brewer recorded a 577 and sophomore Josh Martin chipped in with a 576 as Army's four-man firing unit combined for a team total of 2309, just two points behind the Tigers' 2311. Lewis fired a perfect score of 200 in prone with Martin and team captain Allen Solida, who shot individually, recording a 199.
"I was pleased with our performance in this event," said first-year Army head coach Web Wright. "We had some great moments. Our prone was really good - one of the best performances so far this season. We were able to make up for some of the points we lost during kneeling."
Army's hopes of outpointing Memphis in air rifle were nixed as the Tigers claimed the individual winner and had three finish in the top five. Medalist Elizabeth Lee edged Gestl and teammate Leighton Dempster by a point with a 589 as that duo tied for runner-up honors (588) with Brewer sharing fourth with Tiger Haylea Broughton behind 585s.
Rounding out the rest of Army's air rifle unit were Cuomo (582) and Martin (578), who joined Gestl and Brewer in compiling a 2333 as they trailed the Tigers' score of 2345.
"We had a good performance in air rifle," said Wright, but "not great. Memphis put togher four good scores and edged us out.
"This week we will be focusing on kneeling to get ready for Ohio State. We just gave away too many points kneeling against Memphis and Ol Miss. If we can tighten that up, we will be in a good place."
The Black Knights take a step out of conference competition when they visit Ohio State next weekend.
