January 17, 2023 | Hockey
WEST POINT, NY – Army West Point hockey (7-13-3, 6-8-1 AHA) fell in overtime to RV American International College (12-9-5, 9-5-2 AHA) on Tuesday night at Tate Rink.
The game was scoreless through 50+ minutes until Army broke the deadlock through Lucas Kanta. AIC answered to force overtime, where Gavin Abric's 39 saves weren't enough as Brian Kramer tucked home the game-winner off a rebound.
The first period was fairly even with AIC landing 12 shots on goal compared to Army's 11. Gavin Abric was up to to the task for the Black Knights, turning away everything in sight through the opening 20 minutes.
The second period saw both teams have power-play opportunities, but the goalies continued to delay the opening goal. After each team had killed a penalty, the teams went to 4-on-4 play with 4:32 left in the period after an AIC penalty 11 seconds after one from Army. The game remained scoreless going into the final frame.
Army went to the power-play early in the third period, but it was AIC who had a breakaway opportunity while shorthanded, as Abric was able to stand tall and turn away the shot attempt from Nicholas Cardelli.
During another 4-on-4 stretch, Army was able to take the lead just over halfway through the final period as Lucas Kanta put the Black Knights ahead. Noah Wilson skated in from the defensive zone, laying off the Kanta. The Army freshman handled the puck in closer before firing a wrist shot from just inside the right circle past Alexandros Aslanidis in the AIC goal. The goal marked the third of the season for Kanta.
The Army lead would not last long, with the Yellow Jackets finding their breakthrough just over three minutes later. Dustin Manz redirected a puck sent in front by Cardelli to finally beat Abric with 5:41 left in regulation. Army took a sixth and final penalty with just over two minutes to play, but were able to send the game into overtime, which marked Army's third overtime period in nine days.
After winning the opening faceoff, AIC's first chance of the overtime was a shot from Luis Lindner that was well-saved by Abric, but Brian Kramer was able to tuck home the rebound into the open net to give AIC two points and an overtime winner.
