Army Set for Showdown with #8 Notre Dame

WEST POINT, N.Y. – As the 2018 season comes to an end, the Army West Point men's lacrosse team will face its final opponent of the year in the eighth-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish in South Bend, Ind.
The Black Knights and Fighting Irish will face each other on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. The game will be aired on the ACC Network to mark the second appearance for Army this season on the network.

The Black Knights and Fighting Irish will face each other on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. The game will be aired on the ACC Network to mark the second appearance for Army this season on the network.
ARMY (5-7, 2-6 Patriot League)
- Army and Notre Dame will battle for the eighth time in series history.
- The Fighting Irish boast a 6-2 advantage, but Army came out on top last season in an overtime thriller.
- David Symmes had a career day with four goals and the game-winner in overtime.
- Cole Johnson, Nate Jones and Conor Glancy all chipped in, with a goal and an assist each.
- It was Army's second win over Notre Dame in program history, and first under Joe Alberici.
- The Fighting Irish jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter, but six goals in the second set Army up for the overtime victory.
- Jon LaMonica picked up the loose ball off the faceoff in extra time and dished it to Symmes who in turn plowed past his defender for the score.

- After capturing their second ACC Championship, the Fighting Irish enter the game against the Black Knights with an 8-5 record.
- Notre Dame defeated Duke in the semifinals (14-11) before taking down Virginia (17-7).
- The Fighting Irish are paced by LSM John Sexton. The two-time ACC Defensive Player of the Year has 51 caused turnovers this season and 16 groundballs.
- Offensively, Notre Dame is led by Ryder Garnsey with 36 points on 24 goals, and a team-leading 12 assists, and by Bryan Costabile with 31 points on 27 goals and four assists.
- John Travisano is second in the ACC in faceoff percentage (.567).
- In net, Matt Schmidt has had a standout rookie season.
- He started in all 13 contests and boasts an 8.63 goals against average and a .478 save percentage.
MAKING RANK
- The Cadets rank second nationally in scoring defense with just 7.67 goals allowed per game.
- On the other side, Notre Dame is 15th at 8.85.
- Army's defensive core is responsible for 9.00 caused turnovers per game to rank seventh in college lacrosse.
- Johnny Surdick leads the squad with 22 caused turnovers and sits ninth in the country in caused turnovers per game at 2.00 - all while covering opponents top scorer.
- AJ Barretto's 7.64 goals against average is good for fifth in college lacrosse.
NATIONAL SCORING STREAK
- Jones is currently riding a 13-game goal scoring streak which dates back to last year's game against Notre Dame.
- The junior is one of 13 players in the country to be on a streak of 13 games or more with at least one goal.
- Jones has accumulated 24 goals in the stretch.
MILESTONE TRACKER
- Jones eclipsed the 100 career point mark this season. He has posted three points in Army's last four games and now totals 105 in his career.
- The junior joined 32 others who have accomplished the feat in Army's 101-year history.
ACADEMIC ALL-PATRIOT LEAGUE
- Junior defender Griffin Schultz was named to the Academic All-Patriot League team for the first time in his career.
- Schultz boasts a 3.763 grade-point average while majoring in Economics and minoring in Systems Engineering.
- He has made the Dean's List every semester eligible.
- In his limited spare time, Schultz tutors his teammates in Economics and Physics.
FIRST TEAM ALL-PATRIOT LEAGUE
- Surdick, LaMonica and Symmes garnered First Team All-Patriot League honors.
- Surdick and Symmes were selected to the first team for the second year in a row, while this was LaMonica's first postseason accolade.
- For the second straight year Surdick led the Black Knights' defense in caused turnovers. He averaged 2.13 per game in conference games to rank third in the Patriot League.
- LaMonica was a standout for the Black Knights this season with a team-leading 32 groundballs and 12 caused turnovers.
- Symmes had a strong senior campaign with 14 goals and seven assists for the Black Knights. He also led the team with a .609 shots on goal percentage.
ARMY LEADERS
- Jones leads the Black Knights offensively with 33 points. He tops the team with 23 goals and is followed by Glancy (18) and Symmes (14).
- John Ragno boasts a .555 faceoff efficiency and is third on the team in ground balls with 38.
- LaMonica leads the Black Knights with 55 groundballs to average 4.6 per game, while Surdick totals 41.
- Barretto has made 94 saves. He averages 7.64 goals against and has a .519 save percentage.
STREAKS
- Jones is the lone player to notch at least one goal in every game played this season and a minimum of two points.
- In his last five appearances, Jones has totaled 14 points.
- Glancy has tallied a point in every appearance this season. He boasts 10 in the last five contests.
