May 02, 2018 | Women's Track and Field
WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior Abby Halbrook of the Army West Point track and field team was among the recipients of the Mike Krzyzewski Award for Excellence in Teaching Character Through Sport on Wednesday.
The winners were announced at the Cadet Mess Hall during the 12th annual luncheon where Coach K recognizes West Point athletes and coaches for their outstanding commitment to the development of noble character through athletic participation and leadership. Krzyzewski, a 1969 USMA graduate and former basketball player and coach, presented the awards, a certificate and medal.
The awards recognize West Point athletes and coaches for their outstanding commitment to the development of noble character through athletic participation and leadership. The cadet recipient exemplifies the Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage both on-and-off the "fields of friendly strife."
Dubbed the "Coach K" awards, Halbrook was recognized for not only her athletic success but also for her commitment to excellence and respect for her teammates, opponents, and the sport.
Halbrook heads into her senior year after a hugely successful cow season. During her cross country season, she was the first-place finisher at the Army-Navy star meet and led her team to the first Army win at this meet since 2010. At the Patriot League Championships, she was the individual runner-up and led her team to a second-place finish, which was the best team finish at this meet since 2009.
During track and field season thus far, Halbrook has had incredible performances in both the indoor and outdoor seasons. During the indoor season, she won both the mile and the 800m run at the Army-Navy Star meet, helping her team to a fourth consecutive win over the Mids. At the Indoor Patriot League Championship meet, she was the champion in the 1000m, which assisted the team in finishing in second, the best indoor finish for the squad since 2006. In the outdoor season, she has won both the 1500m and 5000m races at the Army-Navy Star Meet and the 1500m race at the UC Irvine Spring Break Classic.
The Tyler, Texas native has set the school record in the indoor mile run, and was also on the record-breaking distance medley relay team.
Just this year, Halbrook has been honored with an AWPAA Athlete of the Week nod, as well as a cross country Patriot League Runner of the Week title. She was named to the All-Patriot League Cross Country First Team as well as the First and Second All-Patriot League Indoor Track and Field Teams.
