May 16, 2018 | Women's Tennis
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Junior Melanie Allen of the Army West Point women's tennis team garnered Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors for her accomplishments both on the court and in the classroom, the league announced Wednesday morning.
With the award, the Black Knights became the first team to win player of the year, rookie of the year, doubles team of the year, coach of the year, scholar-athlete of the year and the John "Pat" Rooney Award since doubles team of the year was established in 2015. Additionally, it is the first time a team swept the Patriot League's major awards since the 2008 Army squad.
Boasting a 3.653 grade-point average as a Psychology major, Allen was named to the academic all-league team for the second straight season, while being recognized as the scholar-athlete of the year for the first time. The Cape Coral, Fla., native is Army's sixth recipient of the scholar-athlete of the year award and the first since Jamila Paul in 2013. She is also just the third cadet-athlete to earn multiple academic all-league selections, joining Paul (2012-14) and Elle Taylor (2013, '15).
On the court, Allen owned a 19-9 record in singles, while going 9-3 in duals at Army's No. 2 position. She added a 21-13 mark in doubles and was 13-7 in the top flight as part of the Patriot League Doubles Team of the Year with rookie Ana Joyner. The two-time All-Patriot League First Team member set personal bests in singles wins (19), singles league wins (four), doubles wins (21) and top flight doubles wins (13).
