April 23, 2018 | Men's Lacrosse
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – Three members of the Army West Point men's lacrosse team garnered First Team All-Patriot League honors, announced by the league on Monday. Johnny Surdick, Jon LaMonica and David Symmes were all voted to the first team.
The Major Awards and All-League teams were voted on by the nine Patriot League head coaches who could not vote for their student-athletes and selves.
Surdick and Symmes were selected to the first team for the second year in a row, while this is LaMonica's first postseason accolade.
For the second straight year, Surdick led the Black Knights' defense in caused turnovers. He averaged 2.13 per game in conference games to rank third in the Patriot League.
The junior from Odenton, Md., added 41 groundballs this season while guarding the opponent's biggest offensive threat each week. Surdick tallied four assists in 2018 which was a career-high.
LaMonica, who hails from Cazenovia, N.Y., was a standout for the Black Knights this season with a team-leading 32 groundballs and 12 caused turnovers. He was a force on the wings during faceoffs alongside Surdick to help the team to a .522 faceoff percentage.
The senior co-captain scored the first goals of his career this season and added an assist for a total of three points. LaMonica ranked tied for seventh in groundballs per game in the Patriot League at 4.00.
Symmes had a strong senior campaign with 14 goals and seven assists for the Black Knights. He changed roles this season as he was tightly guarded by the opposition, but was Army's go-to midfielder.
The Fairfax Station, Va., native led the midfield with a .609 shot on goal percentage and added six groundballs. It was the second straight season in which Symmes tallied over 20 points.
Army will travel to Notre Dame on May 5 for a 1 p.m. contest from South Bend. The game will be streamed on the ACC Network.
