Army’s Comeback Falls Short to Navy

WEST POINT, N.Y. – In front of a record-breaking crowd at Michie Stadium, the Army West Point men's lacrosse team's comeback fell short in a 9-8 deficit to #17/18 Navy on Saturday.

The Black Knights tallied two goals in the fourth quarter and gained possession when Dom Ricca blocked a Navy shot on an open net. Army brought the ball down to its offensive zone and had three solid looks, but went wide in the final attempt.

HIGHLIGHTS & GAME NOTES

Nate Jones led Army with three goals. It was the junior's seventh career hat trick and fourth this season.
This marks the fourth game in a row in which Jones has recorded three points and has tallied at least two in every game this season.
Matthew Donovan and Sean O'Brien each had one goal and a helper in the effort.
It was the second straight game Donovan notched two points.
Conor Glancy, Nicholas Garofano and Connor DeWitt both added an assist for the Black Knights.
Glancy has garnered at least one point in each game.
It was Garofano's first-career assist and DeWitt's sixth helper of the year.
John Ragno netted his first goal of the year as David Symmes and Matt Manown had solo tallies.
It was Symmes' 48th career goal.
The score by Manown was his first after a five-game drought.
In the net, AJ Barretto made four saves and had four groundballs.
Ragno and Jon LaMonica led the team with five groundballs apiece.
Johnny Surdick boasted a game-best three caused turnovers and picked up four groundballs.
LaMonica aided the Cadets with two caused turnovers.
Prior to the game Army honored its 17 first classmen – Ricca, LaMonica, Ted Glesener, Glancy, Jimmy TenBrink, Matt Goettelman, Nick Santorelli, Symmes, Tim Langerhans, Matt Isnardi, Paul Newbold, Austin Colvin, John Rhudy, Stowe Faircloth, Ragno, Andrew Nadjari and Donovan - in its senior day celebration.
Attendance totaled 15,033 and was a record-breaking crowd for Army-Navy lacrosse at Michie Stadium. It was the second all-time in the series. The 1969 game drew 16,056 fans down in Annapolis, Md.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Saturday featured a back-and-forth game between the service academy rivals.
The Black Knights and Midshipmen each scored one goal in the first quarter.
DeWitt connected with Jones who scored high against Ryan Kern.
Navy scored a goal three minutes later to tie things up at 1-1.
Both teams netted four scores in the second quarter.
The Mids fired first with a man-up goal two minutes in.
Army then scored back-to-back goals that spanned 11 seconds apart.
Glancy fed to O'Brian on top of the crease for the first goal.
Ragno then controlled the faceoff and ran down the field unopposed to score a bounce shot giving the Black Knights their second lead of the day.
Navy and Army traded goals throughout the quarter to keep it tied heading into half (5-5).
Symmes scored his goal with 4:56 left and the Mids retaliated with one three minutes later.
With six seconds to go in the half, Army's Donovan juked around his defender and beat Kern low.
However, Navy gained the next faceoff and came charging down with a score as time ran out.
To open the third the Mids tallied two straight to continue on a 3-0 run.
With 4:32 on the clock, Manown hustled through a scrum of Navy defenders finding himself with an open shot on Navy.
The Mids scored another two to start the fourth, sparking an Army comeback attempt.
Jones netted the final two scores of the game to keep the Black Knights close.
His first came five minutes in off a feed from Garofano. The next was with 6:19 to go off an assist by Donovan.
To close-out the game, Surdick caused a turnover to keep the ball in Army's hands.
After a saved shot, Navy came back down the field and attempted to score on the Black Knights' open goal, but Ricca was there for the block to get the ball moving in the other direction.
Glancy, O'Brien and Anthony George shot just wide ride of the goal in the last 14 seconds in a search for the equalizer.
