Army Amped For Home-Opening Weekend Series
March 30, 2018 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team welcomes Bucknell this weekend for a three-game Patriot League series.
The Black Knights and Bison will go head-to-head in a doubleheader on Saturday before closing things out on Sunday. First pitch on both days is slated for noon.
The Cadets (12-12, 4-0 PL) are riding a five-game winning streak after most recently defeating Siena 9-6 in a midweek tilt. Prior to that, Army swept its conference opening weekend with road doubleheader wins at Bucknell and against service-academy rival Navy at Camden Yards.
Senior Jon Rosoff leads the team with .291 batting average and a team-best 23 hits. Sophomore Drake Titus and junior Josh White are averaging .283 and .276, respectively, as well to lead the squad.
Earlier this week, Josh White and Anthony Giachin were honored by the Patriot League for their performances last weekend. White was tabbed the player of the week, while Giachin garnered rookie of the week honors for the second time this season.
Bucknell enters the weekend with a 5-18 mark and a 2-6 record in league play. The Bison are set to play their first road conferences games of the year after starting the first eight contests at home.Â
Bucknell lineup features three of the Patriot League's top five hitters in Evan Madigan (.359), Tyler Wincig (.350), and Luke Johnson (.349). Wincig leads the league in on-base percentage at .506, and is third in walks with 18.
These two teams played just six days ago with the Black Knights taking a doubleheader, 1-0 and 7-6.
Tyler Giovinco earned the win on the hill in Game 1, while Connor Van Hoose was tabbed with the loss. Van House had a no-hitter going heading into the seventh and final inning, but the Cadets racked up two singles to score what ended up being the game's opening run.
In the nightcap, Carter Van Gytenbeek registered the win after coming in to pitch 1.2 innings of relief, allowing two hits and two runs. Jacob Carte posted his second save of the year when he closed out the final 2.2 innings allowing just one walk. Bucknell's Gottesman gave up six hits and six runs, four earned, during his 5.1 innings on the hill.
