WEST POINT, N.Y. – Sophomore Danna Funaro of the Army West Point women's tennis team was named the Patriot League Female Player of the Week following her stellar opening weekend of league play.
This is Funaro's first time being recognized by the league in her career.
The Fairfield, Conn., native combined to go 5-0 on the weekend with three singles wins and two in doubles. She outscored her opponents in those matches by a combined score of 48-10. Funaro opened the weekend with a 6-1, 6-0, win over Lafayette's Alexa Cooke in the fourth flight before taking down Katya Martin of Holy Cross, 6-0, 6-1, in the second flight. She closed out the weekend with a 6-3, 6-3, victory over Chloe Boustany of Loyola on Sunday.
In doubles, she paired with rookie Ana Joyner to defeat Lafayette's Grace Conrad and Meredith Block, 6-2, in the second flight. Funaro also teamed up with Genevieve McCormick to pick up a 6-0 win in the top flight over Holy Cross' Allison Reiling and Morgan McGuire.
Funaro posted her personal-best 15th singles win of the season against Loyola with the match-clinching win. Additionally, she improved to 5-0 in her career against Patriot League opponents in singles dual play.
The Black Knights return to action this weekend when they travel to Annapolis, Md., for the annual Star match against service-academy rival Navy. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m.
